Cougars target winning start against PHC

Fans turning out for the opening Premier Division league matches tonight at Devonshire Recreation Club can be forgiven for expecting a goalfest in the fixture between the Cougars and Zebras. The tone has already been set with three matches so far between Premier Division teams producing 16 goals, with tonight’s teams both conceding four goals in their Dudley Eve losses three nights ago. That competition alone produced 12 of those goals as PHC were thrashed 4-1 by Somerset Trojans and Cougars went down 4-3 to St. George’s Colts just three days after Dandy Town hammered North Village 4-0 in the Charity Cup.Tonight’s game gives both losers a chance to rebound from their first losses of the season, with home field giving Cougars a slight edge though there is plenty of room for improvement in both camps if they are to match last season’s top-four finishes in the league.Cougars were third behind champions Dandy Town and runners-up North Village while PHC finished fourth, five points behind Cougars who only trailed champions Town by three points.Cougars’ 25 goals conceded last season in the league was the least for any team in the Premier Division while PHC let in 28 in 18 league games. With much of their squad still intact, while adding the likes of Drewonde Bascome and Lovintz Tota from Robin Hood, Cougars are a team capable of threatening Town again. Bascome scored on his debut against St. George’s while Tota made an appearance as substitute, coming on for the injured goalkeeper Kioshi Trott early in the second half.Veteran defender Kijuan Franks was an unused sub and he could get a starting role tonight as they look to tighten up their defence.Tonight’s 7pm opener is a First Division clash between promotion hopefuls Hamilton Parish and relegated Boulevard who are in a rebuilding phase and may not be serious contenders for immediate promotion.Parish have quickly made their intentions known, however, with a 3-0 win over Somerset Eagles in their season opener last weekend while Boulevard adjusted to life back in the First Division with a 2-0 loss to their relegation partners St. David’s.
