Sub Ronaldson sparks Onions celebration
Flanagans Onions 2 St George’s 1Super sub Kevin Ronaldson leapt from the bench to notch a match-winning brace as Flanagans Onions marked their Premier Division debut with a hard fought come-from-behind win over St George’s at Goose Gosling Field yesterday. The English striker struck twice inside of five minutes to cancel out a brilliant solo effort from Allan Douglas Jr that put St George’s ahead. The striker’s last gasp heroics capped a dominant spell by Flanagans who rode their luck at times but made the most of their chances when it mattered most.“Kevin is a good player with good finishing skills as we saw but it was more of a team effort as far as maintaining the pressure,” commented Flanagan’s victorious coach Augusto Arrarte. “All the players played well and we had a lot of support from our supporters which was excellent.“Some things went well and some things not so much but full marks to the players for their perseverance and attitude.”Ronaldson echoed his coach’s sentiments.“It was all about team work and every single person in the team deserves credit,” he said. “ I was just in the right place at the right time.”St George’s must have felt hard done by to come away empty handed after creating ample scoring opportunities to put the match beyond their hosts’ reach.Mishael Paynter, Jarazinho Bassett and Jahron Dickinson all squandered golden chances in the first half which saw St George’s maintain a slight edge over their rivals who were forced to defend for long spells.Paynter missed a sitter from four yards out with only ‘keeper Stephen Gould to beat, an unmarked Dickinson glanced a back post header wide while Bassett took too long to pull the trigger after springing the offside trap and had the ball gathered at his feet by the onrushing ‘keeper.Flanagans grew in confidence as the half progressed and began creating chances of their own.Forward Pete Robey came close with a low drive that St George’s ‘keeper Charles Marshall Jr dived full length to push around the post while former PHC Zebra Keston Lewis had another low drive saved by the ‘keeper.Flanagans also had a goal ruled offside just before the teams went into the half scoreless.St George’s were by far the better team after the break and they nearly broke the deadlock when Bassett had a goal bound effort cleared off the line by defender Lee Osborne.Dickinson then rattled the woodwork with a curling left footed free kick while at the opposite end Marshall was forced to tip Sam Butler’s swerving cross over the bar.Flanagans had another goal ruled offside just moments before sub Douglas put St George’s ahead in the 74th minute. Douglas rode two tackles before charging into the box and smashing the ball past Gould. The goal seemed to inject more life into Flanagans who took only six minutes to equalise after the unmarked Ronaldson fired home Lewis’ pass from close range. The towering striker then capitalised on some more sloppy defending when he nodded in a free header at the back post in the 85th minute to complete his team’s brave fightback.Flanagans Onions: S Gould, P Matthews, J Donnelly, S Butler, J Knight, L Osborne, S Lister (M Laws), D Dodrin, H Thomason, K Lewis, P Robey (K Ronaldson).Substitues not used: D O’Sullivan, B AmoroGoals: K Ronaldson, 80, 85Yellow cards: P Matthews, L Osborne, K RonaldsonSt George’s: C Marshall Jr, M Paynter, D Signor, J Darrell, M Hodsoll (C Ottley), C Durham, K Williams, J Bassett, A Heyliger (A Douglas Jr), E Signor, J DickinsonSubstitutes not used: K Carlington, Z Burgess, M TuckerGoal: A Douglas 74Referee: L RaynorMan of the match: K Ronaldson (Flanagans)
