Lewis upset by prizegiving delay

BFA president Larry Mussenden

Bermuda Football Association’s failure to stage the long overdue 2011-12 prizegiving ceremony has been met with dismay by some of those involved with the sport. The 2012-13 season is already in full swing yet local football’s governing body still haven’t announced a date for the presentations in which players and coaches are recognised for their achievements in the previous campaign. That doesn’t sit well with former Western Stars Sports Club president Cecil Lewis.“The BFA have not made any official announcement stating whether they are having it or not and personally I would like to know what their plans are,” Lewis told The Royal Gazette. “It’s very disappointing they (BFA) have not had the prizegiving which I believe takes away from all the players’ and coaches’ hard work and sacrifice.“The BFA have made no announcement and I have heard many people complain, including some from my own club.”Lewis fears that the delay could discourage players from being involved in the national sport.“Not having a prizegiving is sending the wrong message because there’s no incentive for players to carry on and stuff like that,” he said. “If they (BFA) are cash strapped then I’m sure clubs although they may be in the same predicament will be more than willing to pitch in as a family and have the prizegiving.”Lewis said the BFA did not have to have a glamorous ceremony such as those held in past years if the reason for the delay was lack of finances.“They (BFA) do not have to have a big ceremony . . . all they have to do is invite the recipients to the office and just give them what they are due. We are not looking for any big fanfare and if they are cash strapped we can understand that and I’m sure the clubs would be willing to pitch in and help.”When contacted on the matter, BFA president Larry Mussenden said: “We are working on the prize presentation.“As you know over all of the years we’ve always had a very good prize presentation when we honour the players and the teams for their performances on the field and we are just as keen to have the prize presentation for last season.“Unfortunately, we did not have it at the end of the season for various reasons but it’s still just as important to us to have it to be able to honour those players and teams that deserve to be recognised. And we will very shortly be announcing the date to have the presentation.”When asked to give reasons for the delay, Mussenden replied: “No, I can’t give the reasons.”
