Thomason strike hands Onions win over Village
Flanagan’s 1North Village 0Newly promoted Flanagan’s took over sole possession of first place in the Premier Division on Saturday night when a lone first half strike from Gavin Thomason settled the points at Goose Gosling Field. The midfielder scored directly from an inswinging corner in the 27th minute after the ball bounced inside the Village penalty area and went untouched across a crowded area and into the far corner. The lead was deserving for Flanagan’s who matched their opponents in the opening half.In fact Village keeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, whose agility was restricted by an early leg injury from a collision, kept Village in the game in the first half with some good saves.Lee Osborne drove an effort just over the bar from 25 yards midway through the half, then Adams made a crucial point blank save from striker Keston Lewis as the Village defence was stretched. Then Brian Amaro’s shot towards the far post was smartly turned around the post by the diving Adams after Lewis laid the ball back for Amaro on the edge of the box.Thomason’s goal gave Onions the confidence to push on and again they were denied by the hobbling Adams who tipped a shot from Lewis over the bar. At the other end a weak shot straight at Stephen Gould by Keishen Bean was Village’s best chance of the half as Onions ended the first 45 minutes with an effort from Thomason from a freekick on the right side of the box which brought off another save by Adams who turned the effort around the near post.Village stepped up a gear in the second half and had the bulk of the possession without fully testing Gould in the Onion goals. Jemeiko Jennings and Ralph Bean saw a lot of the ball in midfield for Village but the Onions defence stood firm. The introduction of Lashun Dill gave Village a boost to their attack and his pace on the right caused some problems.Village came closest to an equaliser in the dying minutes when Ralph Bean’s left-footed effort from distance was tipped over the bar by Gould. At the other end Adams made another vital save to deny substitute Alex White as Onions looked to stretch their lead after Village were caught on the break. The victory was the third in four matches for unbeaten Onions who moved on to ten points.Flanagan’s: S Gould; P Matthews, J Donnelly (M Laws 83), S Butler, J Knight, L Osborne, G Thomason, A Kelly, B Amaro (A White 69), K Szmierek, K Lewis.Substitutes not used: T Godfrey, D O’Sullivan, S UptonGoal: G.Thomason, 27Booked: K.LewisNorth Village: D Adams; S Jennings, K Talbot, D Hunt (L Dill 69), M Swan, T Watson (S Ming 83min), K Dill, J Jennings, R Bean, P Smith, K Bean.Subtitutes not used: K Knights.Referee: L WilsonMan of the match: D.Adams (Village)
