Toronto out of Champions League

Reggie Lambe and Freddy Hall couldn’t prevent Toronto FC from bowing out of the Concacaf Champions League with a 1-0 defeat at Mexico’s Santos Laguna on Wednesday night.Toronto needed to win by more than two goals to advance from the group stage but were undone by USA international Herculez Gomez who struck a volley past goalkeeper Hall in the 73rd minute. The visitors made a lively start with Lambe releasing Ryan Johnson with a through ball which the big striker shot straight at Laguna keeper Miguel Becerra.Moments later Lambe again picked out Johnson with a left wing cross but the Jamaican international failed to direct his weak header on goal.Santos were on the attack soon later and Jorge Estrada forced a save from Freddy Hall. But Toronto answered back when Jeremy Hall put in a ball over to the top to Lambe, whose shot from the right side of the box was saved by Becerra. The breakthrough finally came after 73 minutes when Gomez took one touch before firing a volley past a helpless Hall.Toronto, bottom of the Eastern Conference, take on Columbus away on Sunday in their final match of the MLS regular season.
