Several charged after football bust-up
Several people have been charged in connection with a nasty incident that forced a First Division football match to be abandoned. The controversial game between Devonshire Colts and Hamilton Parish at Police Field was abandoned with the teams deadlocked at 3-3 after female referee’s assistant Wendy Woodley was allegedly threatened and abused.Bermuda Football Association (BFA) general secretary David Sabir has confirmed that several individuals have been summoned to appear before the association’s disciplinary committee to answer charges for bringing the September 30 game into disrepute.“There have been several people who have been charged with the incident,” Sabir said. “So as far as that is concerned we have to wait until the outcome of the disciplinary committee’s decision as they are the ones who are adjudicating all matters which are still ongoing.”Parish launched their own probe into the circumstances that led to match being abandoned.A club spokesperson confirmed that the entire team had been placed on probation for the remainder of the season. The spokesperson said if any of the club’s players land themselves in hot water while on probation they could be suspended for as much as three games.According to reports “all hell broke loose” in the latter stages of last September’s controversial First Division match after Woodley allegedly refused to give a Parish player more room to take a corner kick.“The whole situation was really out of control,” said one observer, speaking under condition of anonymity.“The corner was being taken and the player was asking for some more space to take the corner and an argument ensued between the player and the lineswoman which resulted in players and spectators getting involved.“The daughter (Woodley’s) was involved as well and was using her flag as a weapon to hit players.”Another observer said: “The referee was called over to ask her (Woodley) to move but she said ‘no’. Then her daughter, who was a lineswoman on the other side, ran over and got into it and some accusations were made and so forth and it escalated. From there all hell broke loose and the game had to be abandoned due to the threats.”BFA general secretary Sabir has denied claims that Woodley has been suspended for her involvement in the incident.“She hasn’t been suspended,” he said. “She is not officiating at the moment because she’s not on the schedule and I have no comment on that because it’s an internal matter.”Bermuda Football Referee’s Association president Kuhn Evans added: “She thought it would be in her best interest to take some time off until the situation is all sorted out.”
