Stovell’s late strike hands Trojans the trophy
North Village 1 Somerset Trojans 2 (aet)Dion Stovell’s extra-time winner restored some of the shine at Silvercity as Trojans came from behind to edge Rams in Sunday’s Dudley Eve Final at the National Sports Centre.Just when it seemed as though penalties would be required to separate the two sides, Stovell created a goal out of nothing in the second period of extra-time to finally settle a cup final that failed to live up to expectations.Gaining possession of the ball just inside the box with several defenders blocking his path, Stovell dribbled parallel to goal, cut back and squeezed his left-footed shot inside Dwayne Adams’ far post to send the Dudley Eve Trophy on its way to Somerset for the first time in six years.Earlier, Rams forged ahead against the run of play through a contentious goal from Joshua DeSilva before former Village player Tyrell Burgess equalised for Trojans from the penalty spot after being tripped up in the box.Commenting on his team’s win, Trojans captain Trevin Ming said: “This is a very big win for Somerset and we like this feeling. Coach Trott (Mark Trott) has always told us winning is contagious and hopefully this rubs off on everybody.”Ming pointed to mental toughness as one of the keys to his team’s success.“We knew we had to keep our heads and everything else would go our way,” he said. “And we always have confidence in our players.”That Trojans prevailed also owed much to ‘keeper Shaquille Bean, nephew of former Trojan Rodre (Piper) Wilson, who made countless saves to keep the West Enders in the match.Trojans were slow shifting through the gears and they nearly paid the price when Rams’ captain Kaiwon Dill’s defence-splitting pass sent Corey Boyce racing towards goal. But with only ‘keeper Bean standing in his way Boyce hurried his shot into the side netting when scoring seemed easier. The close call seemed to jolt Trojans into action and after taking control of midfield the West Enders forced Rams on the back foot with a series of raids down both flanks where the relentless pace of Burgess and Aldophus Lambert caused problems.Rams’ ‘keeper Adams raced off his line to thwart Jelani Butterfield, Burgess lifted Stovell’s pullback over the bar while Lambert curled a shot just wide of the upright.Rams defender Jason Davis also made a timely tackle to deny a subdued Jonathan Bean a free run at goal and then breathed a huge sigh of relief after Burgess’ angled shot took a deflection off his body and sailed past the far post. After soaking up the pressure, Village gave an ominous warning of things to come when Bean raced off his line to clear the ball away from the onrushing Davis and DeSilva.Evidently, Trojans did not heed the warning and found themselves trailing in the 33rd minute after DeSilva lobbed the onrushing Bean after being put through by Keishen Bean’s pass over the top of the defence. The goal was allowed to stand even though DeSilva appeared to be standing in an offside position when the ball was played forward.Rams joy, though, was short-lived as Trojans were back on even terms three minutes later when Burgess was sent sprawling in the box on a quick counter attack. The speedy winger dusted himself off and buried his spot-kick to the left of the diving Adams who picked the right corner. Both teams brought on fresh legs in the second half in the hope of gaining the upper hand and created several chances to add to their tally.Having regained control of the middle of the park, Rams’ confidence grew with each attacking foray while a more defensive Trojans occasionally threatened on the counter attack. However, neither team could break the stalemate and the game dragged on into extra-time where Stovell’s solo effort proved to be the difference.Despite coming up short, Rams captain Dill, deputising for the suspended Jemeiko Jenings, said his team made a good account of themselves.“We played a hard game and were a bit unlucky but we can still hold our heads high,” he said.North Village: D Adams, K Bean, C Boyce (S DeGraff, 63 mins), P Castle, K Dill (capt), P Smith, J Davis, T Jennings, K Talbot, L Dill (K Knights 97 mins), J DeSilva (Z Hendrickson, 90 mins)Subs not used: R Dublin, W MingGoals: J DeSilva (33 mins)Booked: C BoyceSomerset: S Bean, T Ming (capt), I Mallory, J Rogers, J Harvey- Outerbridge, A Lambert (J Simmons (103 mins), S Brangman, D Stovell, T Burgess (A Trott (71 mins), J Butterfield (T Wade (56 mins), J BeanSubs not used: A Jombwe, L Burgess, A Burrows, H Santucci, N Smith, Nacori SmithGoals: T Burgess (36 mins), D Stovell (108 mins)Man of the match: S Bean (Somerset)Referee: Anthony Francis
