Local trio set for crunch semi-final
Unbeaten Darton State College, featuring three Bermudian footballers, will face off with Tyler Community College in today’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division One Men’s Soccer Championship semi-final in Albany, Georgia.The Cavaliers, whose team boasts locals Troy Tucker, Jamel Swan and Jaylon Bather, reached the last four after cruising to a 3-0 win against Western Texas in the previous round.Sweeper Bather and 1st Team All-American midfielder and Georgia Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (GJCAA) MVP Tucker both played influential roles in their team’s comfortable win, with the latter supplying the pass that led to what proved to be the game winning goal scored by Jowayne Laidley in the 14th minute.Andrew Palumbo struck twice after the break to put the match beyond the reach of a Westerners side that failed to get a single shot on target.The Cavaliers, who haven’t lost at home in nearly two seasons, completed the regular season undefeated to reach the 12-team national tournament where they have been seeded number one.
