Lightbourne banking on Russell to boost Hood

Robin Hood coach Kyle Lightbourne has backed new striker Antwan Russell to grab the goals to secure the club’s top-flight status.Russell bagged a brace to help Hood to victory in their relegation six-pointer at St George’s last weekend, boosting the Premier Division strugglers survival chances. The 25-year-old had only recently completed a second trial at MLS side Toronto FC, who have invited him to return for pre-season training in January in a bid to win a contract.Having missed September’s transfer deadline, Russell has been made to wait for his Hood debut and Lightbourne admits the marksman’s availability couldn’t have come soon enough.“Antwan brings some pace to the side which is something we have been lacking this season,” said Lightbourne.“He also carries a goal threat and it’s a big boost to have him available as he helps out the other players.“Antwan along with the other new transfers who have come in this month have really helped us out.“Sunday’s win handed Hood their first points of the season having lost their opening five league matches, with Lightbourne fearing his side would have been virtually relegated had they lost to the East Enders.“It was vital for us to win against St George’s as we’ve had a very tough start to the season, losing five game in a row,” said Lightbourne, who replaced Andrew Bascome as Hood coach at end of last season.“We were very comfortable on Sunday and hopefully we can take confidence from that.“It’s been a very tough start to the season because basically we just didn’t have enough players and the balance of the team just wasn’t right.”Hood remain rooted to the bottom of the table, five points from safety, with a tough encounter at defending champions Dandy Town at the weekend.“We know what position we’re in and we just need to keep on picking up points because there’s still a lot to play for,” added Lightbourne.“We have a tough game against Dandy Town on Sunday that’s definitely going to be a hard game for us.“This is season is all about survival for us and, while it would be nice to have a good cup run, our main priority is simply staying up.”Wolves, who are five points ahead of Hood, take on third place PHC at Devonshire Rec. on Friday at 8pm, while North Village host Somerset Trojans at Bernard Park on Saturday at 9pm.On Sunday, St George’s take on Devonshire Rec at Wellington Oval, and Southampton Rangers face Flanagan’s Onions at Southampton Oval. Both games kick off at 3pm.
