Rangers continue win streak
Southampton 2 Flanagans Onions 0Southampton Rangers continued their winning ways at Southampton Oval yesterday, scoring a goal in each half to see off fast fading Flanagans Onions.Ths hosts prevailed on goals from strikers Ezekiel Stoneham and Dennis Russell against an Onions side that was reduced to ten men in the 90th minute when defender Phil Matthews received a second yellow card.Matthews’ dismissal following a skirmish with Rangers sub Dwayne Pearman Jr perhaps best summed up his team’s frustrations during a match which the home side dominated throughout.Rangers also struck the woodwork twice after midfielders Janeiro Tucker and Vernon Perinchief tried their luck from long range. The home team forged ahead when Stoneham slotted in Perinchief’s rebound from a free kick to give Rangers a 1-0 lead at the half.Russell then put the match beyond Onions’ reach when he converted a penalty after being pulled back by Matthews in the box to take his season tally to eight goals in seven matches.Matthews’ afternoon then went from bad to worse when he was sent off in stoppage time to leave his team a man short.Rangers coach Marvin Belboda was pleased with his team’s dominant display that swept them to their fifth league win of the season.“We dictated how we wanted to play and I was pleased with the outcome,” he said. “We could’ve played better but we’re happy to come away with maximum points.”Despite the win Rangers slipped from first to second, level on points with leaders Devonshire Cougars who have scored more goals.
