Wells nets as Bantams snatch draw
Bradford City striker Nahki Wells, after two games without a goal, found his shooting boots again on Saturday as he netted in the Bantams’ 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers at Memorial Stadium. The Bermuda international scored in the 28th minute after City had earlier fallen behind to a header from Rovers’ debutant Guy Brantson who opened his scoring account at his new club with his first touch of the ball.Wells hit the target from a tight angle after being played into space by Will Atkinson to take his season tally to 14 goals. The Bantams trailed three times in the match but still managed to salvage a point on the road.“It was a hard earned point even though realistically we should be beating Rovers given the circumstances they are struggling near bottom of the league,” Wells told The Royal Gazette. “We showed good character coming from behind three times but we made it difficult for ourselves conceding an early goal.“It was just one of those cold, rainy Saturday afternoons down south which was going to be a scrappy game. But we are pleased to have got four points from our last two games and I got back to scoring ways after not scoring in the last two games.”City are currently fifth in the League Two, level on points (32) with fourth-placed Southend.Brantson gave Rovers a dream start when he scored in the second minute of the match before Wells converted at the opposite end to draw the sides level. The hosts regained the lead in the 32nd minute when Tom Eaves buried a low drive to give his team a 2-1 cushion at the half.City were back on even terms 10 minutes after the restart after Carl McHugh headed in a goal. But Rovers grabbed the lead for a third time when Michael Smith volleyed home minutes later. However, all hopes Rovers had of claiming a fourth home win of the season evaporated when James Hanson equalised for City with an 68th minute header to earn his team a share of the spoils.Saturday’s contest did not go without controversy as both teams were reduced to ten men after Rovers’ Wayne Brown and City’s Nathan Doyle received their marching orders for their involvement in an ugly scuffle.Brown lunged into City’s James Meredith with a wild tackle right in front of the benches. Tempers flared as Doyle confronted Brown over the needless tackle before both sets of players joined in with pushing and shoving. When the dust had settled, Doyle was shown straight red while Brown received a second yellow card.
