Jonte hits target again as Police grab draw

Jonte Smith: Scored the equaliser as Metropolitan Police salvaged a draw against Lewes in the Isthmian League in England.

Metropolitan Police striker Jonte Smith took his season goal tally to 23 as he helped the Blues salvage a point in a 1-1 home draw with Lewes at the weekend. The Bermudian converted an 84th minute penalty after being fouled in the box to spare his team’s blushes at Imber Court on Saturday.“A cross came out from wide right and I was shoved from behind as I went to attack the ball,” Smith told The Royal Gazette. “The ref called the penalty and I stepped up and took it. I’m always confident in taking penalties and backing myself to score.”Chris Breach scored for the visitors who took the lead early in the second half.Smith admitted his team’s performance was below par.“It definitely wasn’t one of our best performances,” he said. “We looked a bit lethargic and maybe there were a few tired legs from the previous game (Isthmian League Cup).“It was also cold, windy and rainy which wasn’t conducive to good football.”Saturday’s hard fought draw lifted Met Police four places from 18th to 14th in the Ryman League Premier Division standings.Former North Village youth player Smith has now scored four goals in his last two appearances, following a hat trick in a 5-3 win over Walton Casuals in the Isthmian League Cup last week. It was the striker’s second treble of the season.Smith, Met Police’s current leadin goalscorer, is presently on an extended loan spell with the 2010-11 Ryman Isthmian League Division One South champions after being loaned out for a month by parent club Crawley Town last August. The 18-year-old striker’s dream of playing professional football became a reality last April when he signed a one-year contract with Crawley after banging in more that 20 goals playing for the Red Devils’ academy and reserve teams, including a hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers in the English FA Youth Cup.
