Manders ready to leave Canada Soccer League
Taurean Manders believes his career has reached a crossroads with the Bermuda midfielder set to quit the Canadian Soccer League (CSL).Manders helped York Region Shooters to the CSL semi-finals last season, losing 2-1 to Montreal Impact Academy, but feels it’s time for him to find a more comfortable standard of living. The 26-year-old said there had been interest in him from teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League. However, he was unable to attend trials as the dates clashed with the CSL semi-finals.“As I’m getting older I need to establish a sort of stable standard of living and the CSL alone won't give me that,” said Manders, a regular for Bermuda during last year’s World Cup qualifying campaign.“Right now I’m waiting to see what options open up. I was supposed to train with a couple indoor teams but those dates were before the semi-final and by the time I was available they had looked elsewhere.“But we will see what happens before the new year and then I’ll make a decision about my career.”Manders, who spent one season at former CSL side Capital City before joining Shooters, admitted he was concerned the league wasn’t moving in the right direction and in danger of stagnation.“I believe this was my last season in Canada. The CSL is not a top league in North America and there's a feeling that they are okay with that,” said Manders, whose father Andre is a former Somerset Cup Match skipper.“The level is okay but it could be better and the structure could be better too. I just feel that those in power are okay with the state of the league.”Despite being a virtual ever-present for Shooters, Manders’ best form evaded him last term although he is adamant the team should have made the final.“I think we could have created a few more chances against Montreal but our final ball and finishing let us down,” said the ex-North Village man.“I also feel we gave them two goals with the two mistakes we made. They didn't create much, which echoed the rest of the season because we were in the top four in the league defensively. It was disappointing for us but such is football.”He added: “I am my own harshest critic, I always feel I could do better. My season was okay but by my standards I feel it definitely wasn't my best.“I may have been pretty consistent, though, starting all but two matches, so I must have been doing something right.”
