Davis own goal adds to Hood misery
North Village 1 Robin Hood 0An own goal from Kashi Davis handed North Village a hard-fought win over relegation-threatened Robin Hood at Bernard Park yesterday.Village took the lead in the 15th minute when Davis poked the ball into his own net when attempting to clear a goal-bound shot by Pierre Smith. The Rams dominated for the remainder of the first half but struggled to break down an organised and resilient looking Hood. After the break the game continued in a similar vein with Village enjoying large swathes of possession and Hood looking to pounce on the break. It was a ploy that very nearly worked for Kyle Lightbourne’s side with Antwan Russell firing wide from just inside the area after being released by substitute Mikre Pace.At the other end, Village went close when Smith lifted a shot over Timmy Figureido’s crossbar following good work down the right wing by the lively Clay Darrell.Russell’s speed was causing Village’s makeshift backline problems although the former PHC striker was lacking his normal precision in front of goal. The Toronto FC trialist squandered another chance when he tamely fired straight at veteran keeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, and then missed the target altogether with another left-footed chance.Village were also lacking cutting edge in attack. Ralph Bean saw a crisp volley well-saved by Figureido who then denied Keishen Bean with a fine stop with his outstretched right leg.In-form winger Darrell went the closest to putting the game out of Hood’s reach when he crashed a shot against the upright when it perhaps would have been wiser to square for the unmarked Keishen Bean.Village defender Jason Davis admitted it wasn’t Village’s finest performance but said the victory was vital to keeping alive their title hopes.“It was a collective performance by us today and we had to grind out the victory,” said Davis, a customary midfielder.“We really needed the three points to keep in touching distance with the top sides in the league.“We had plenty of chances to score after taking the lead but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”Davis said he was more than happy to fill in at centre back despite having never played the position before this season.“It’s different for me; it’s not a position I have any real experience of playing in,” he said.“It’s a bit of a transition but I’m more than happy to play wherever the team needs me.”North Village: D Adams, K Bean, R Bean, C Darrell, J Davis, T Wilson, K Talbot, P Castle, J Jennings, P Smith (C Boyce, 80), K DillSubstitutes not used: J DeSilva, W Ming, Z Hendrickson, K DurrantGoal: K Davis (own goal, 15)Yellow cards: J Jennings, T JenningsRobin Hood: T Figureido, J Crockwell, K Davis, S Franks, J Duffy, Q Maynard, B Robinson (R Wilson, 70), M Thomas (M Pace), T Terceira, D Williams (M Hunt, 71) A RussellSubstitutes not used: C Harvey, J Federico, T BellReferee: L RaynorMan-of-the-match: J Jennings (Village)
