Cougars and PHC set for Friendship clash

The last two teams for the semi-final draw in the Friendship Trophy will be determined tonight during a double-header at Devonshire Rec.Already new champions are certain to be crowned in both the Friendship and Shield competitions following early eliminations by North Village and St David’s at the hands of Flanagan’s Onions and BAA.Now Devonshire Cougars will be hoping to benefit from home field advantage when they meet PHC Zebras in tonight’s nightcap. They will also be hoping for better fortunes in this cup competition as the last one, the Dudley Eve, saw them lose to both St George’s and Dandy Town in their Group matches.PHC, too, had a bad start to the season, losing both their group matches to Somerset and North Village to go with a loss and a draw in the league as coach Wendell Furbert stepped down from the post.Mark Wade took over the post and the team fortunes have improved to see them climb to second in the league, just a point behind Cougars with six wins and a draw in their first nine matches. Both Cougars and Zebras enjoyed good results in their last outings, Cougars thrashing Southampton Rangers 5-2 in the league on Kor-von Tucker’s hat-trick while the Zebras twice came from behind to beat Robin Hood 4-2 in the Friendship preliminary round as Shakir Smith scored three goals for the Zebras in an exciting match. In tonight’s 7pm opener Rangers are favoured to bounce back from that Cougars defeat with victory over struggling St George’s Colts.Rangers have lost their last two night matches to Somerset Trojans and Cougars in the league to slip to third in the tables while the East Enders have slipped to the bottom of the standings and wondering where their next win is coming from.Their only win in the league was against Somerset Trojans on October 7.The winners of tonight’s matches will join Dandy Town and Somerset in the semi-finals scheduled for Boxing Day and December 27 at Wellington Oval and Goose Gosling Field.
