Zebras edge past defending champions
PHC 2 Dandy Town 1PHC completed the ‘double’ over Dandy Town yesterday at Southampton Oval to replace the defending league champions in second place in the league tables.PHC, who won 3-1 at St John’s Field back in October in Mark Wade’s first match back as coach following the resignation of Wendell Furbert, were deserving of the three points as Town failed to cut Devonshire Cougars’ lead at the top back to three points. The home team looked hungry from the outset and went close to opening the scoring in the 11th minute when Town’s Fabian Frankson lost possession on the left side and a quick break saw captain Cecoy Robinson race into the box before hitting a shot on the run that was just wide of the far post. PHC looked the more likely to score in the opening 15 minutes though Town did create a good opportunity on the break when Raymond Beach crossed from the left and Angelo Simmons at the far post put his effort wide with just goalkeeper Troy Hall to beat.A brilliant solo move by PHC winger Shakir Smith broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when he dribbed into the box and drove a left-footed shot past Treadwell Gibbons in the Town goal. Town suffered the loss of midfielder Skyah Furbert late in the first half with a suspected dislocated shoulder when he fell awkwardly after challenging Jevone Sealey for a high ball. The match was held up for 10 minutes as Furbert received treatment before being taken to hospital.Town continued to struggle to create openings after the restart as Zebras looked the more fluent, and threatening, with Smith and Robinson using their pace on the flanks. Beach went close for Town in the 64th minute with a glancing header to a Frankson from the left as Town enjoyed a good spell. Tempers started to flare with Town’s Angelo Simmons and Johnny Ball of PHC booked for an off-the-ball incident.PHC doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Robinson netted from close range, before he was denied a second goal moments later when Gibbons tipped his effort over the bar after he broke clear of the defence.Town pulled a goal back with a well-taken effort from veteran striker Beach in the 83rd minute but PHC hung on for the crucial three points after some missed chances left the scoreline close.PHC: T Hall, R Richardson, M Lambe, C Robinson, J Ball, L Bascome (K Lambe 70), J Sealey, M Waldron, S Smith, M Piper, C Robinson (K Lightbourne 83)Goals: S Smith, 29, C Robinson, 71Bookings: J.Ball.Dandy Town: T Gibbons, A Lowe, J Stowe, K Tucker, S Tuzo, D Ming, F Frankson (D Butterfield 70), S Furbert (K Lathan 41), R Wells (L Simmons 58), A Simmons, R BeachGoal: R.
