Rangers confident of advancing past St George’s
Southampton Rangers striker Dennis Russell is adamant that St George’s won’t be let off the hook in the two sides FA Cup replay on Sunday at Southampton Oval. The pair played to a 1-1 draw in the original fixture at Wellington Oval, resulting in them having to settle the tie in the weekend’s match.Accusing his team, including himself, of wastefulness in front of goal in the first match, Russell has pledged that the second time around his men won’t be as gracious.“The last match we missed so many chances that we only have ourselves to blame for going to a replay. We were all over them both in possession and chances, but we must take our chances when they come if not we will be in for a fight.“That was our biggest issue and we just need to be ready for them when they come, if you don’t take your chances you will be punished in the long run.”Rangers and Colts have played close matches this year, with Rangers winning the first league game in St. George’s 3-2, and the reverse fixture ending in a 2-2 last weekend. The weekend’s game will also be the third match between the two clubs in less than one month, a footnote that may render the match a stalemate for long parts.Russell will be his club’s ‘go to’ man to produce goals and must be an integral part of their play if they are to be successful. One thing is for sure, however, there will be a winner at the end of the day, either outright after 90 or 120 minutes, or via the penalty spot.“Southampton haven’t won a title in many years so we want to make a run and set ourselves up to potentially get to the final then anything is possible.“We are playing well at the moment and we want to bring something home soon.“Being the main striker and having to produce goals each week is something to take on with pride, it isn’t really a big deal to me.“Holders Dandy Town will also need a replay this weekend if they are to advance to the quarter-finals, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Flanagan’s Onions in their first meeting when Onions scored a late equaliser at St. John’s Field. The draw for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup will be held at BFA office this morning.Wolves, Devonshire Cougars, Somerset Trojans, PHC and Robin Hood are already through to the last eight.
