Youngsters offered overseas opportunities

Eleven student athletes have been offered opportunities to continue their schooling overseas after impressing at the third annual Bermuda’s Brazilian Football School (BBFS) College Prep School Festival.Held at the National Sports Centre recently, the showcase saw eight US, Canadian and UK college and professional academy coaches run the rule over local male and female players.The aim of the event was to provide pathways into further education for local players and make North American college scouts aware of the Island’s talent.BBFS CEO Cal Blankendal was left encouraged by the feedback he had received from the visiting coaches who he said were impressed with the young players.“The festival allows players to showcase their talent and be seen by scouts.“With the academic and sport programmes coming together in the camp, it gives overseas coaches a good chance to look at what we have here on the Island as well as talk to the players.”Blankendal revealed that one player had been offered a trial at an professional English Championship club but remained tight-lipped on the youngster’s identity.Five male players have also been invited to a semi-pro United Soccer Leagues PDL training camp with tours of universities and colleges also scheduled, while five female players were recommended to attend an advanced residential camp in the US.“A player has been given an opportunity to travel to England to train with a Championship side for assessment,” added Blankendal.“There are also five players who will travel to Canada to KWFC United to experience life the semi-professional level within the PDL league. The girls will be also going away to learn and develop their skills overseas.”
