Wolves aren’t safe just yet, insists skipper Peniston
Wolves might have all but secured their top-flight status but skipper Jared Peniston has urged his teammates not to take their foot off the pedal. The Devonshire-based side gave their survival hopes a huge boost by defeating relegation threatened St George’s 2-1 at Wellington Oval on Sunday. It lifted Wolves ahead of Flanagan’s Onions into seventh, ten points above the dreaded drop zone with four games remaining this season. But despite the healthy gap, Peniston, a former Bermuda international, admits he won’t rest until Wolves are mathematically safe from relgation.“It was an important victory in order to keep Wolves up in the Premier Division,” said Peniston, whose side face Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval on Sunday.“ They were just behind us heading into the weekend and to put more space between us and them was important heading into the game.“Knowing how important that match was due to the proximity of the clubs in the table, there was pressure to get the result but more pressure on St George’s because they needed to catch us.“Although we are pretty much safe, we need a few more points and now the focus is to try and stay ahead of Flanagans, St George’s and Robin Hood.”Hood’s draw with Southampton Rangers at Goose Gosling Field last weekend didn’t help their cause, leaving them nine points behind Onions on eight points, with time running out for Kyle Lightbourne’s side.St George’s also remain in deep trouble, nine points behind Onions who are on 17 points, and now seem certain to go down to the First Division. The title also be wrapped up in the coming weeks, with league leaders Devonshire Cougars (31) still six points ahead of Dandy Town and North Village, who both remain in the hunt following their wins against PHC and Onions at the weekend. While Cougars seem to have their destiny in their own hands, Village can still have an impact as they have to face Dandy Town and the Big Cats in the next few weeks. This week’s Premier Division fixtures see Cougars play Onions at Devonshire Rec. on Friday night, while Somerset Trojans face PHC at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday. Both games kick off at 9pm.On Sunday at 3pm, Hornets take on Village at St John’s Field, Hood meet St George’s at Goose Gosling Field and Rangers play Wolves at Southampton Oval.
