Wolves secure survival with victory over Rangers

Southampton Rangers 1 Wolves 3Vince Minors Jr netted an insurance goal and had a hand in two others as visiting Wolves secured their Premier Division status for next season with this convincing win against Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval yesterday. With the match delicately poised at 2-1 in the visitors’ favour after Wolves player Lamelle Paynter netted an own goal to give Rangers a glimmer of hope, striker Minors kept his cool when it mattered most and slotted the ball past onrushing ‘keeper Jason Smith to restore the visitors’ two-goal cushion for good.Earlier, Minors supplied a perfect corner kick for strike partner Derrick Brangman to powerfully head home at the near post before linking up with Shaki Pearman whose short pass in the box was drilled home by influential midfielder John Barry Nusum from an angle. The outcome enabled new Wolves coach Mark Jennings to make a winning start to his tenure in his first match at the helm of the Devonshire club who were clearly the better team on the day.“We just came to play and try to do the simple things well to win the game and I am happy with the way things went,” Jennings told The Royal Gazette. After Minors put Wolves ahead 3-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match the visitors had several chances to extend their lead as Rangers continued to unravel at the seams. But through a combination of wasteful finishing, timely tackles and the linesman’s flag, Rangers were spared further blushes.“I thought we could’ve scored a bit more with the chances we had,” Jennings said. “We have to make sure we put more of our chances away because goals win the game.”That’s a fundamental lesson that Rangers learned the hard way after squandering several gilt -edge chances during the opening stanza that ultimately came back to haunt them.Wolves nearly broke the deadlock as early as the second minute when Rangers ‘keeper Smith hesitated to collect a bouncing ball in the box. Pearman beat the ‘keeper to the loose ball, dribbled to the touchline before his attempted pass to a teammate was cleared away. The near disaster appeared to jolt Rangers into action as they bombarded the Wolves goal at the other end.Dennis Russell nodded over the bar after Rangers teammate Keedai Astwood’s accurate cross found the striker unmarked in the box.Midfielder Janeiro Tucker had a goal-bound downward header blocked and a volley saved at the near post by Wolves ‘keeper Jahhi Shakir. Rangers player/coach Marvin Belboda also had a low drive saved by Shakir as the hosts continued to pile on the pressure. But just when it seemed a Rangers goal was imminent Brangman scored with a forceful header in the 16th minute that stunned the home supporters and gave the visitors the lead against the run of play.Belboda had the ball in the back of the net at the other end minutes before the break but Rangers’ celebrations were muted as Jamaican referee Elihu Holmes ruled it offside.Whatever encouragement Belboda offered his players at the half went out the window three-minutes after the restart as Nusum buried a shot from close range.Rangers were thrown a lifeline a minute later when Milton Ferreia’s cross was mishandled by Wolves ‘keeper Shakir and the loose ball bounced off the head of Paynter and into the empty net.But any thoughts of a Rangers fightback were extinguished by the diminutive Minors who capitalised on a breakaway after being sent in the clear by Nusum’s defence splitting pass.Yesterday’s Premier match between Robin Hood and St George’s at Goose Gosling Field was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.Rangers: J Smith, J Charles, T Russell, V Perinchief, M Ferreia (R Lowe, 50), D Russell, M Burch (capt), M Belboda, K Astwood, J Tucker (S Astwood, 76), J Hill (E Stoneham, 68)Goals: J Paynter (own goal, 49)Booked: J HillWolves: J Shakir, L Paynter, M Williams, J Peniston (capt), K Brangman (D Usher, 45), J Nusum, D Simons, V Minors, D Brangman (H Burrows, 60), T Davis, S Pearman (T Tucker, 72)Goals: D Brangman (16), J Nusum (48), V Minors (67)Booked: V MinorsMan of the match: V Minors (Wolves)Referee: E Holmes
