Cougars on brink of title glory
Devonshire Cougars could virtually wrap up the Premier Division title tonight when they entertain relegation threatened St George’s Colts in a Premier Division clash at Devonshire Rec at 8pm.Victory for the home side would also virtually send St George’s back into the First Division next season and put Cougars on 37 points which is the most Village can finish with. Thus, a win for Cougars will leave them one point from the title, though a win for them, combined with even a draw in Village’s home match with Somerset on Sunday would make Cougars the champions for 2012-13.St George’s, however, could extend the league race and their own hopes for survival with an unlikely win tonight. Village will certainly hope for a St George’s win as the Rams would then have something to play for next Sunday when they host Cougars at Bernard Park ... assuming they get past Somerset Trojans on Sunday.St George’s have managed to beat Cougars this season, though that victory in the Dudley Eve back in September seems like a long, long time ago now. For a team that had established itself in the top flight over the last couple of season, their quick demise has been hard for their fans to take. They haven’t established any consistency in the league and eight points from 14 matches tells an accurate picture. Now they must win all their four remaining matches — and hope Flanagan’s lose their last three — to have any chance of surviving.Onions could virtually make themselves save in their first season in the Premier Division with victory over Southampton Rangers on Sunday. Last weekend Wolves secured their survival with victory over Rangers and with St George’s and Robin Hood still to meet each other, both won’t be able to avoid the drop. Hood, too, face a must-win situation with Dandy Town in the Saturday night fixture at Goose Gosling Field at 9pm.Meanwhile, Cougars remain in the hunt for a first triple crown having already landed the Friendship Trophy in January when they beat Dandy Town on penalty kicks. They will have plenty of incentive to wrap up the league this weekend, thus concentrating on the FA Cup where they have a semi-final tie with Southampton Rangers.Yesterday’s draw at the Bermuda Football Association put Dandy Town against Somerset in the first semi-final on March 27 at Devonshire Rec while Cougars will meet Rangers three days later at BAA Field..
