Cougars stretch unbeaten run

North Village 1 Devonshire Cougars 3Newly crowned Premier champions Devonshire Cougars stretched their unbeaten league streak to 13 games with this comfortable win against Rams at Bernard Park yesterday. The Big Cats went straight for the jugular, clawing their way to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they forced their hosts to play second fiddle on their own turf.Cougars prevailed on goals from Korvon Tucker, a Patraic Castle own goal and another from super sub Mark Steede.DeVrae Tankard scored Rams’ consolation which was presented to the defender on a silver platter.Making Cougars triumph all the more impressive is the fact they achieved it without several key players in the line-up including influential skipper Chris Caisey.“We basically play to a system and whoever comes into that system is expected to perform,” said Cougars coach Dennis Brown who gave his team’s dominant display the proverbial thumbs up. “I was very pleased with my players’ performance, they stuck to the game plan.”Cougars might have won by a wider margin had it not been for the outstanding goalkeeping of Rams custodian Randall Bassett who made a series of saves to keep the final scoreline respectable.Bassett denied Cougars winger Domico Coddington twice from close range in the early stages as the visitors set about stamping their authority on the match. He also denied Coddington and midfielder Drewonde Bascome in the second half.Cougars were forced to make a sub as early as the 25th minute when midfielder Demetri Daniels complained of a headache and was replaced by Makai Battersbee. The change did little to offset Cougars rhythm as within two minutes of the restart they took the lead for good when Tucker latched onto a long ball played over the top of the defence and calmly slotted home from close range.Cougars’ lead was then doubled in the 39th minute when Coddington’s shot came back off the woodwork, struck Rams defender Castle and rolled across the line.Rams’ best chance of the half fell to striker Pierre Smith whose shot from close range was easily saved by Cougars goalkeeper Kioshi Trott who had a mostly quiet afternoon between the posts.Cougars continued to boss the midfield and terrorise Rams down the flanks after the break so it really came as no surprise when Steede tapped in from close range in the 66th minute with his second touch of the ball after coming on for Jesse Seymour to make it 3-0.The goal arrived just as Rams began to poke holes in Cougars last line of defence.Rams would eventually score in the 77th minute with the help of Cougars keeper Trott. After a Rams attack had broken down Trott hastily tried to throw the ball to a teammate but only succeeded in finding Tankard who capitalised on the ‘keeper’s only blunder of the match.Rams substitute Clay Darrell then missed a golden opportunity to shave his team’s deficit to one goal after fizzing a low drive past the far post from an angle. That proved to be the closest the home side would come to scoring again as Cougars put up the shutters and protected their two goal cushion until referee Lyndon Raynor blew the final whistle. The Big Cats clinched a fourth Premier championship the previous week despite being held to a draw by relegation threatened St George’s Colts at home.North Village: R Bassett, V Tankard, K Bean, P Castle, J Davis, K Durrant (L Dill), Z Hendrickson (K Talbot), J Jennings, P Smith (C Darrell), D Tankard, T DurhamGoals: D Tankard, 77Devonshire Cougars: K Trott, D Williams, L Tota, D Cox, Z White, Z Iris, D Bascome, D Coddington (J Mouchette), K Tucker, J Seymour (M Steede), D Daniels (M Battersbee)Goals: K Tucker, 27, P Castle (Rams) own goal, 39, M Steede, 66Booked: M SteedeMan of the match: D Coddington (Cougars)Referee: L Raynor
