St George’s go down as Hood boost survival hopes
Robin Hood 1St George’s 0St George’s have been relegated to the second tier after suffering a ‘do-or-die’ defeat in a tense encounter against fellow strugglers Robin Hood at Goose Gosling Field last night.Antwan Russell struck from the penalty spot on the 56th minute to condemn St George’s to First Division football next season and give Hood, who would have been relegated had they lost, renewed hope of survival.Hood seemed doomed a few weeks ago but will complete the ‘great escape’ if they beat North Village on Sunday and Flanagan’s Onions lose against Somerset Trojans.Kyle Lightbourne’s side are three points behind their relegation rivals but have a better goal difference following Onions’ 9-0 thrashing at the hands of PHC last weekend. Both Hood and Onions who require just a point from their game are playing away from home in Sunday’s final weekend of the league season. For St George’s, however, their brave fight against the drop came to a crushing end last night although veteran defender Ernest Signor believes the club will come back stronger.“Going down hurts, but we have to look to rebuild because in the later stages of the season we created chances but didn’t put them away; that’s been out story all season and that was the case tonight,” he said.“I’m proud of the guys, we have battled all season and we will be back if we remain committed to the cause that’s in front of us, and that’s regaining promotion.”Both sides required victory in last night’s rearranged fixture, a draw would have seen both relegated, but it was Hood who held their nerve to keep their survival hopes alive.Hood’s match-winner Russell had a chance cleared off the line midway through the first half, while St George’s Allan Douglas Jr went close with a good chance which just missed the target before the break.Early in the second half the visitor’s Mitchell Tucker was adjudged to have handled in the box with Russell making no mistake from the spot to give Hood the all-important win.“We live to fight another day; I thought we played well tonight, we gave away a few needless things, but overall but I’m proud of the effort,” said Hood coach Kyle Lightbourne.“I thought we all played well, they came out with the hunger as well and came down to the team who wanted it more.“Our goal came from a penalty, and we were fortunate but we have to look at it as half a job.”
