Bean welcomes selection headaches at new-look Rams
By Derek deChabertNorth Village coach Ralph Bean has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal following an influx of new players during the first phase of transfers.Rams have picked up more than a dozen fresh faces this summer, including free scoring striker Jahron Dickinson from St George’s and former Village utility player Tyrell Burgess from Somerset Trojans.Bean, who took over the coaching reins from Shaun Goater midway through last season, admits it won’t be easy keeping his new-look squad happy, although it’s a headache he’s more than happy to have.“I’m cautiously optimistic because there are two things that can go down in a situation like this,” said Bean, who is not expected to play this season.“The first is it heightens the level or play and dedication among the players, but it can also make a problem in terms of minutes and keeping players happy so it’s a fine balance.“Having all these players would give any coach a good selection headache, We feel like the numbers we have are good and can provide healthy competition in the team.“We will cross the bridge when it comes in terms of selection for games, but we are still seeing how things are shaping up.”Village were within touching distance of the Premier Division title last term, but a late slip to St George’s at home handed the championship to Devonshire Cougars. The Rams finished the campaign in fourth, ten points off behind the Big Cats. But with key additions such as Dickinson and Burgess as well as Quadir Maynard and Takeyhi Walker from relegated Robin Hood, Village have assembled a squad that will be the envy of many rival coaches.Bean will also have options in the goalkeeping department with Zane Hendrickson returning from St George’s, and Deaz Chambers and Troy Hall Jr signing from Dandy Town and PHC. All three will be battling out for the number one jersey, a position Village have struggled to fill since the departure of Jason Williams. Also joining Village’s longlist of newcomers is Mikre Pace from Hood and Wolves duo Shannon Lee and Shannon Deshields.Bean believes Rams’ raft of new captures will add much-needed experience to the young side that faltered as it approached the finish line last term.“We had a good team last year that was young, but we were also shallow with the bench because of players being injured or not being able to come out for various reason,” he said.“These new players can only help us in the long run as we’re adding to what we already had so it’s a good thing.”Village start their season with matches against PHC and Southampton Rangers in the Dudley Eve next month.
