Bermuda fourth in Under-15 tournament

Bermuda had to settle for fourth place in the CONCACAF Under-15 Championships as they lost their third place match to El Salvador 2-0 in the Cayman Islands on Sunday evening.Goals from Henry Reyes in the 40th minute and Kevin Ramos in the 65th secured the win for the Central American side.Bermuda’s Amar Lewis was voted Man of the Match. And Bermuda, who were unbeaten in the group stage, received the Fair Play award.Honduras defeated Guatemala 2-1 to win the tournament. Both goals for Honduras were scored by their Man of the Match and MVP of the tournament Darixon Vuelto in the sixth and 51st minutes. The goalscorer for Guatemala was Mario Rodas in the 24th minute.Cayman’s Leighton Thomas won the Golden Boot and Honduras goalkeeper Wilmer Martinez won the Golden Glove. Also in action over the weekend were Bermuda’s Under-12, Under-13 and Under-14 National Academy select teams at the Naples Cup tournament in Florida where they enjoyed success. The Under-12 and Under-13 boys were crowned champions after finishing the tournament undefeated, while the the Under-14s missed out on making it a clean sweep for Bermuda when they were defeated in the semi-final.In the Under-12 final, Bermuda cruised past Englewood Rays 7-0 to seal the championship. That match was followed by a 1-1 draw with second-placed Mako Sharks in the Under-13 division, a result that gave Bermuda the title. In the Under-14 semis, a lacklustre performance saw Bermuda fail to get out of first gear and slump to a 2-0 defeat to Leg AZ Caimans. But Bermuda Football Association Youth Director Richard Todd said he was optimistic about the up and coming crop of players.“The Naples Cup tour has been an overall success for the national academy programme,” said Todd. “The tournament also provided the youngest teams in the national Academy programme the opportunity to compete and further develop the playing style of the Academy teams.“This developmental tour was designed to expose the players and coaches to the protocols of travel, and the behaviours associated with travel. The experience gained playing against different opposition will be valuable to the players and coaches moving forward.”
