Trojans braced for must-win match against Hornets
Dudley Eve cup holders Somerset Trojans need a victory against Dandy Town at Goose Gosling Field tonight to have any chance of advancing to the last four of the competition.A draw would eliminate Trojans, who lost to Devonshire Cougars last weekend, and send the Big Cats and Town into the semi-finals.Hornets put themselves in a good position in their first match when they came from behind to beat Cougars at Bernard Park recently with captain for the day Brandon Minors heading the second half winner from a corner.“It was a result of hard work by the team,” said Minors after the game, not wanting to take all the glory.“We worked very hard to get to that point and the header was just the result of the hard work. It feels good (to score the winner) and I’m just trying to lead by example. It was a very good way to start the season and we have a lot of hard work to do still, so we’re going to keep moving forward.”Tonight’s opening Dudley Eve match will see PHC take on North Village in a Group B encounter in which both teams have already qualified for the semi-finals following the two defeats suffered by Southampton Rangers.Bermuda Football Association will host the first round of league matches next weekend when defending champions Cougars open the defence of their title with a match at Goose Gosling Field next Saturday night against Flanagan’s Onions.Four matches are scheduled for next Sunday in both the Premier Division and First Division, which has been reduced to ten teams following the late withdrawal from the league of Prospect. The schedule, which is being distributed to the affiliate clubs, has had to be adjusted following the unavailability of Devonshire Rec for immediate night matches because major repairs are being carried out on their lights, which forced tonight’s scheduled Dudley Eve matches to be switched to Goose Gosling Field.“It’s been a great task of putting the schedule together which is nearing completion, and just when we thought the final schedule was to be released, we received notice from Devonshire Recreation Club that they are going to be doing major works to their lighting, so we have had to make a few amendments from having one less night field available in an already congested schedule for night fields,” said BFA vice-president Cal Blankendal, who is hoping for a season of entertaining football, great atmosphere and safety at the grounds. “The general public is looking for football after about three weeks of no activity, when EPL starts we start getting quite a few calls about when our leagues are going to start. The Dudley Eve started on the Tuesday after the Charity Cup and it started with a bang with lots of goals, a good turnout and a good atmosphere at the grounds.”St John Ambulance Brigade were the recipients of funds raised at the recent Charity Cup match between Devonshire Cougars and Somerset Trojans when the Bermuda Football Association yesterday presented them a cheque for $1,379.38.The annual season-opening match between the Premier Division and FA Cup winners is used to raise funds for charities and St John Ambulance was this year’s chosen charity.Yesterday, Blankendal handed the cheque to St John volunteer Jeffrey Borges, stating: “We are really proud and honoured to present this cheque to St John, they’ve been a part of not only the Bermuda Football Association but many other events requiring first aid and first responder services and we hope that the much needed funds that they require to carry out volunteer services as no charge to any of the organisations and the community at large, that they continue with the good works,” said Blankendal.Opening league matches:Saturday, Sept 21: First Division — BAA v Devonshire Colts (Goose Gosling Field 7.00); Premier Division Flanagan’s Onions v Devonshire Cougars (Goose Gosling Field 9.00).Sunday, Sept 22: First Division — Paget v Robin Hood (Southampton Oval); St George’s v Somerset Eagles (Wellington Oval); Boulevard v X-Roads (Police Field); Ireland Rangers v YMSC (Malabar Field).Premier Division — Hamilton Parish v Somerset (Wellington Oval); Southampton Rangers v St David’s (Southampton Oval); Dandy Town v North Village (St John’s Field); Wolves v PHC (Devonshire Rec).
