Wells gives Ilkeston thumbs-up
Nahki Wells believes Ilkeston FC can provide the perfect platform for gifted young Bermudian players to launch a career in the English game. The Bradford City striker was among a strong Bermudian presence at the New Manor Ground for the Robins’ 4-3 defeat to struggling King’s Lynn on Tuesday night, in a show of support for his compatriot Antwan Russell.Wells, who has scored nine goals for the Bantams already this season, said he was impressed with the club’s “magnificent’ set-up and had been surprised by the standard of play.“It’s been a pleasure to come to Ilkeston and watch the lads tonight. The standard was decent and higher than I expected, and I think the ground is magnificent for a club of this size,” said Wells, who was joined in the crowd by Bermuda goalkeeper Freddy Hall.“It looks like the club is on the way up and now there’s outlet for the Bermuda players with the Bermuda Hogges (link up).”Ilkeston have earned a reputation as one of the most ambitious non-league sides and this summer forged a partnership with Bermuda Hogges.Among those Bermudians to have left the subtropical island for the rolling hills of Derbyshire are Russell, Lejuan Simmons, Dante Leverock and Rai Simons — with Wells hoping for more to follow.“It’s a great outlet for Bermuda players. Anyone who gets the opportunity and comes and gives one hundred percent will make the club and their fans happy.“I have no doubt (Ilkeston) can be a good stepping stone and it’s a good level for some players to be playing at.”Striker Russell won a penalty early in the second half, resulting in a red card for King’s Lynn’s Ryan Clarke, which was converted by Aaron Webster to make it 2-2.Despite their numerical disadvantage, King Lynn — who have conceded the most goals in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier this season — pulled off an unlikely win over Ilkeston.Wells said he has no doubt that Russell would make the most of his exciting opportunity at the club. The former Robin Hood striker scored three goals last season for Ilkeston who are coached by Kevin Wilson, a former Walsall team-mate of Hood boss Kyle Lightbourne.“Antwan is experienced and I’ve played with him at the national team level, and I think this level should be good for him. It’s difficult to break into the English game but this should be a great experience for Antwan and I know there’s more to come for him.”
