Todd: Bermuda ready to make history

Bermuda women's Under-17 national team face Haiti tomorrow in the semi-finals of the CFU World Cup qualifiers

Bermuda’s Under-17 women are on the verge of making history ahead of their semi-final showdown against Haiti in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) World Cup qualifiers.Tonight’s match is without question the most important to have ever been played by a Bermuda women’s national team, with a berth at next month’s Concacaf World Cup qualifiers at stake.Standing in their way are a “ruthless” Haiti side, who are expected to be cheered on by a partisan crowd at the Sylvio Cator Stadium in Port au Prince. While Bermuda respect the ability of their opponents — they demolished US Virgin Island 22-0 in their group — National Academy director Richard Todd insists the Gombey Warriors have “no fear” against the tournament hosts.“(Haiti) were ruthless in their demolition of the US Virgin Islands. This speaks a lot to the mentality of their team, that they will not let up and that they can finish their chances,” Todd told The Royal Gazette.“Looking at game film from previous matches and the last tournament in 2010, I expect that Haiti will be a competitive match for Bermuda and will be motivated playing in front of their home crowd.“Our coaches have worked on keeping the players focused, and not allowing them to develop a false confidence. They will have respect for Haiti, but it is important that they do not fear playing them. We will be ready to play.”Encouragingly for Bermuda, Haiti lost 2-0 to Puerto Rico in the group phase — a team that narrowly defeated Bermuda in the previous round.Todd, however, has warned against taking too much solace from that result, considering Haiti had already qualified for the semi-finals and might have taken the opportunity to rest their best players.“We have to be careful into how much we read into the result against Puerto Rico in which (Haiti) lost 2-0,” added Todd. “They had already advanced to the semi-final and one has to ask if they elected to rest players for that match, or if they even fancied playing Bermuda over regional rivals Trinidad.”Bermuda, who finished their group undefeated in first place, pulled off a surprise 1-0 win against regional powerhouse Trinidad last weekend, a performance that has instilled belief and confidence in the Bermuda dressing room.“There was some degree of unknown heading into the tournament as we do not get the opportunity to compete in the region on a regular basis,” Todd said.“The result against Trinidad suggests that the level of our play is getting better.“We have shown growth since the match with Puerto Rico where we let a 1-0 lead slip away late in the game.“The disappointment from that match has fuelled their motivation. Now it is about believing we can finish the job and get it done.”Bermuda take on Haiti at 8.30pm (Bermuda time), with Puerto Rico playing Trinidad in tonight’s other semi-final.Both finalists will advance in the Concacaf regional qualifiers scheduled for Jamaica from October 30 to November 9.USA, Canada, Mexico, hosts Jamaica, Central American qualifiers El Salvador and Guatemala await the two CFU advancing teams.
