Hornets took Onions lightly, admits Ming

Hornets' Damon Ming was sent off against Flanagan's Onions in the Premier Division last weekend. Onions won 1-0.

Dandy Town winger Damon Ming believes his team’s disappointing 1-0 defeat against Flanagan’s Onions will have no bearing on the Premier Division title race.

Hornets suffered their first loss of the campaign against Onions at St John’s Field last weekend, which was arguably the biggest upset of the season so far.

And with defending champions Devonshire Cougars beating PHC 3-2 last Friday at Devonshire Rec., Hornets’ lead at the top of the table slipped from three points to just goal difference.

Ming, who was sent off in the second half, praised Onions for sticking to their game plan and outworking Hornets.

“It wasn’t the result we were looking for. They came out with a game plan and certain tactics, so you have to take your hat off to them for doing the job,” said the Bermuda international.

“There’s still too much football to be played and maybe in the end if we fall just short we can look back and point to this result and say that’s where we went wrong.

“Looking at the game, we didn’t play enough ground ball to put them under any real pressure and stretch them across the field.

“They were looking to play long ball for most of the time after their goal, given that their job was done.

“They won their flick-ons and things of that nature but we didn’t do enough to get anything out of the game.

“When you play teams like Onions they come out with a plan, whether it’s winning set pieces or sitting deep and defending, but you have to be able to break them down and we didn’t on the day.”

Ming has now urged his teammates not to slip into a false sense of security as they did last weekend when the face teams they expect to beat.

“When you’re at the top every team is coming for you and you have to be ready,” he said.

“You have to focus on the task at hand, especially at home where you are expected to win and get the job done.

“We can bounce back but it was a real eye opener. We may have taken them for granted and didn’t stick to our plan going into the game, but to say this result is going to hurt us in the long run is not true.”

Town’s next match is against Southampton Rangers at St John’s Field this weekend.
