Khano rated as fifth best Caribbean MLS player
Khano Smith has been named as one of the five most successful Caribbean players to have played in the MLS by the league’s official website.
Smith, who retired from professional football in 2011, had two spells at New England Revolution and a short stint at New York Red Bulls during his six seasons in the MLS.
The Bermuda player was selected as the fifth best Caribbean player to have graced the league, behind Peguero Jean-Philippe (Haiti), Atiba Harris (St Kitts & Nevis), Ezra Hendrickson (St Vincent & Grenadines) and his former Revolution team-mate Shalrie Joseph (Grenada), who claimed top spot.
The website, mlssoccer.com, describes Smith as “one of the most maddening and thrilling players in MLS history” and “capable of putting a cross right in the mixer or into the 20th row”.
Former Dandy Town winger, Smith, made 108 MLS appearances, scoring eight goals, and helped Revolution reach two MLS Cup finals, losing both to Houston Dynamo. He was the first Bermudian to play in the MLS.
Since retiring, the 32-year-old has joined Revolution’s coaching staff as their Academy Under-18 assistant coach and recently attended United States Youth Futsal Association’s first coaching academy in Massachusetts.
Last month the MLS announced a partnership with the Caribbean Football Union, who will host a Caribbean Player Combine in Antigua in January.
The idea is to help unearth young talented players from the Caribbean, particularly the smaller islands which don’t get same the exposure as powerhouses Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Cuba.
