Eve propels Colts into Shield final

Devonshire Colts will take on Somerset Eagles in the First Division Shield final on New Year’s Day after Jahde Eve’s late brace sunk Boulevard at Goose Gosling Field last night.

Eve’s double came in the 75th and 80th minutes to complete the comeback for Colts, who also got the opener through Quinn Simmons in the twelfth minute.

Aaron Williams and Dunn-ya Taylor scored solo strikes in the 51st and 54th minute respectively for Blazers in the loss.

“It was nice to see the crowd out tonight and I thought they got their money’s worth,” Ray Jones, the president of Devonshire Colts, said. “What they saw was two teams that came out with a lot of heart and desire, and went and tried to win the game.

“We dominated the first half, and the game should have been over by the break, but our inability to put our chances away gave them a lease on life in the second half, which they took.”

Simmons opened the scoring early in the match when he struck a fierce drive that beat Shejuan Swan in the Blazers net, and he nearly found himself on the scoresheet again moments later.

His finishing, however, let him down as he failed to direct his shot goalwards from three yards after beating the Boulevard offside trap.

While the visiting side dictated the first half of the match, they had nothing little to show in terms of goals for their superior play and were made to pay for their wastefulness in the opening exchanges in the second half.

Committing a foul deep in their area, Colts were to rue their missed opportunities as Taylor swung a curling free kick to the back post that was met by Williams, whose header beat Greg Rose in goal for Colts.

Before they could gather themselves and reassert their authority on the match, Colts were pegged back farther by Taylor’s goal, only four minutes after Williams opened his side’s account.

Latching on to a lobbed ball over the Colts defence, Taylor unleashed a dipping volley from 20 yards that Rose could not stop, albeit it was right at him.

Now on the back foot, Colts made a double substitution, bringing on Carlos Trott and Eve, with the two proving to be the impetus that they needed to get something out of the match.

Trott would be the supplier for both of Eve’s goals, with the latter latching on to a driven cross for his first — a smart finish.

His long-range effort that caught Swan off-guard would prove to be the final twist in the match, leaving Boulevard to think about what might have been.

“Our coach made a strategic change in bringing on the right substitutes at the right time and in the end that was the difference,” Jones said.

“In games like this, it will take something subtle and our changes in the end are what won us the game.”
