Village still in race for the double, says Bean

North Village coach Ralph Bean

Ralph Bean Jr, the North Village coach, believes his side have the necessary ingredients to win a tenth FA Cup this season.

The Rams, who beat historic rivals PHC 3-2 in the round of 16, have it all to play for in the run-in to both the Premier Division and FA Cup.

They sit three points behind Dandy Town in the league and have a quarter-final showdown against Southampton Rangers this weekend at Southampton Oval.

Bean, who admits each remaining match is crucial if Village are to achieve their trophy-winning ambitions, believes his side can maintain the consistency that has them in the thick of two battles.

“It is always pleasing to see hard work pay off in terms of being consistent, but the consistency has to turn into results, and at the moment the results have us in two competition,” Bean said. “It doesn’t really matter what situation we are in at the moment, now is the time to go out and get results. It is do-or-die time and we can’t afford any slip-ups.”

In the previous match between Village and Rangers less than two weeks ago, a late Vernon Perinchief free kick cancelled out a Tyrell Burgess strike at Bernard Park. Village also won the first fixture at the Southampton Oval 3-2.

While adamant that his side have learned from their worrying habit of turning off at crucial times of the match, Bean is expecting an exciting encounter.

“Lessons always have to be learned, regardless of your age. If you can’t make adjustments to a situation on a moment’s notice then you will be left behind in life,” Bean said.

“The last encounter was a real interesting one in that we had the upper hand for the most part in the game, and fell asleep in the final minutes and concede the foul and the goal. Focus is something that we have to concentrate on for 90 minutes if we are to be successful and advance to the next round.”

Bean refused to pick either of the remaining pieces of silverware as more important than the other.

“The difference in a cup run and league title challenge is simple: one you can a few losses because it is over the course of a period of time, while the other is win or go home,” Bean added. “We envisioned ourselves competing for silverware, so to be honest we expected to be in this situation.”

Also in the FA Cup, Devonshire Cougars face Somerset Trojans at Devonshire Recreational Club on Friday evening. Dandy Town take on Hamilton Parish at St John’s Field, while St George’s play Robin Hood at Wellington Oval on Sunday.
