Smith-DeShields torments Rangers

Hat-trick hero: Smith-Deshields

Southampton 0

North Village 5

Jahquan Smith-DeShields struck a hat-trick as North Village crushed ten man Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval in the FA Cup quarter-final yesterday.

Ralph Bean, the North Village coach, applauded his team’s “selfless” performance which also saw Tyrell Burgess and Jahron Dickinson get their names on the scoresheet.

Willie Clemons, the Rangers midfielder, was sent off for two bookable offences.

“It was a good performance overall, we played well from the outset and in the end were deserved winners,” Bean said.

“There is only one chance to win the Cup, and today we move on which was the biggest objective in this. We had solidarity in our performance out there, we showed what teamwork can do for a team if they play the game selfless.”

Smith-Deshields was in the thick of the action from the opening whistle, hustling the Rangers back four for every ball.

His hard work and dedication to the cause was rewarded as early as the 12th minute when he slotted past Jason Smith, the Rangers goalkeeper, following a neat passing move. He had his brace 22 minutes later, latching onto a Jemeiko Jennings pass, finishing with aplomb at the back post.

Not to be outdone, defender Burgess scored the goal of the match when his diving header in first half stoppage time beat Smith at the back post. The placement of the header rendered the Rangers shot stopper a spectator, although he made a valiant effort to reach the low shot. Smith-Deshields grabbed his hat-trick after being played through again by the impressive Jennings early in the second half.

Outpacing the defence, he calmly rounded Smith and tucked home into an empty net. Clemons was then be sent off midway through the second half for a second bookable offence, hauling down Village striker Pierre Smith in the middle of the park.

The game threatened to get out of hand with tackles flying from both sets of players, but referee Martin Wyer kept a lid on the game.

Shannon Deshields, the Village defender, brought out a fine save from Smith in the dying stages, as his looping drive had to be tipped over the crossbar by the busy goalkeeper. The subsequent corner saw Smith again being called upon to make a save, from a Jonathan Briers shot that seemed to be destined to make the scoreline much worse.

Dickinson, who had been working tirelessly to get on the scoresheet, then slotted his effort to Smith’s right late on.
