Outrage at Wolves after BFA rules out replay

Robert Thomas, the Wolves manager, has lashed out at the Bermuda Football Association’s decision not to replay Sunday’s abandoned Premier Division match against Southampton Rangers.

The match, involving two teams battling to avoid relegation, was abandoned by referee Lyndon Raynor in the 81st minute with the score deadlocked at 2-2 after torrential downpours flooded the pitch.

In accordance with league rules, the BFA ruled that the score at the time should stand and awarded each team a point. “This is a ridiculous decision because there is so much at stake,” Thomas said. “I would have preferred a replay because both teams need maximum points and it should have been left up to us to lose points.”

Thomas believes that the ruling has given Rangers an advantage in the relegation battle. “They [Rangers] were already two points ahead of us going into the match, so I think they have given them the advantage, which is not cool,” he said.

In contrast, Maurice Lowe, the Rangers player-coach, took the decision in stride. “The ruling was made in accordance with the rules of the game, so there is no dispute there,” he said. “We would have liked to have won that game because it would have given us a bit of a margin between us and Wolves.

“There are three fixtures left, so we still have work to do to secure our place in this division.”

As it stands, only four points separate bottom side St David’s from eighth-placed Rangers. Wolves, who are ninth, will host St David’s in another bottom-of-the-table clash at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday before facing Devonshire Cougars and North Village in their remaining matches.

After this weekend’s clash with Wolves, St David’s will come up against high-flying Dandy Town and Flanagan’s Onions.

Southampton will close out the season against Town, Onions and Somerset Trojans.
