Smith finds scoring touch in Finland

Off the mark: striker Smith

Finland has proven to be a fertile hunting ground for Bermuda striker Jonté Smith.

Smith has found goals easy to come by since last month’s loan move from Crawley Town, of Sky Bet League One, to Kemi Kings, who play in the Kakkonen North league in Finland’s third tier.

The 19-year-old scored five goals in as many outings during his team’s pre-season and scored on his league debut in the Kings’ 2-0 home victory over PK-37 at the weekend.

Smith’s goal arrived in the 84th minute when he tapped in a poor clearance at the near post moments after hitting the crossbar with a header. The former North Village youth-team player was substituted shortly after opening his account, with his team firmly in control.

“I’m extremely happy to score on my league debut,” Smith said. “Hopefully, there is more to come.”

Winger Jonathan Dollery, who previously played with Smith at Crawley, gave the Kings the lead in the 34th minute with a curling left-foot shot from outside of the penalty area that caught the goalkeeper off his line.

“I have settled in nicely since I moved to Finland to join Kemi Kings,” Smith added. “It has helped that one of my former team-mates from Crawley Town, Jon Dollery, is here as well.”

Kemi Kings are coached by Tommy Taylor, the former West Ham United defender, who has helped Smith to adjust in Scandinavia.

“I love being at the club; everyone, including the manager Tommy Taylor, makes me feel at home,” Smith said. “It is exciting being in a new country and a new atmosphere. It is a refreshing and an unbelievable experience that I will never forget. There are very talented players at the club and the club thrives on hard work.

“I’m 100 per cent focused on helping Kemi Kings to achieve promotion this year.”

Crawley have opted not to renew Smith’s contract once it expires in June, with Antti Pasanen, the chairman of Kemi Kings, confirming that the striker will remain at his club at least until the end of the season.

“We see lots of potential in him and we are sure he can help us to get promoted to the first division,” Pasanen said. “He is a striker, so naturally we are hoping he can score loads of goals. We are excited to have him here.”

Kemi Kings are away to Oulun Luistinesura on Saturday.
