Kemi Kings feel best yet to come from Smith

Jonte Smith is experiencing a new culture in Finland

Antti Pasanen, the chairman of Kemi Kings in Finland, believes the best is yet to come from Jonté Smith, the Bermudian striker.

Smith has hit the ground running at his new club since his move from Crawley Town, the Sky Bet League One side, two months ago.

The Bermuda striker scored five goals in as many outings during the Kings’ pre-season and scored on his league debut in a 2-0 home victory over PK-37 at the weekend.

“It is easy to see that Jonté is a good quality player and I strongly believe he will score loads of goals for us this season,” Pasanen said.

“He is still a bit rusty sometimes, but I think it is because he is not used to playing on turf. At end of the next month, we will go back to real grass and I think then we will see the best of Jonté Smith.”

The 19-year-old has been loaned to the Kings for the rest of the English season when his contract at Crawley will have run its course.

“He will be on loan until end of the June and after that he will continue as our player at least until end of the season,” Pasanen said. “We just signed a contract with him and it includes two option years after this season.”

Smith signed a one-year deal with Crawley in April 2012 after a prolific season with the club’s under-18 side, which was extended for another 12 months in March 2013.

The teenager was loaned out by Crawley three times this season, having had stints with non-League clubs Havant & Waterlooville, Met Police and Gosport Borough.

After recovering from an ankle injury, he sustained while playing for Crawley in a pre-season friendly against Millwall, the Championship side, Smith embarked on a two-month loan spell with Havant & Waterlooville last September, but failed to nail down a regular starting berth.

The former North Village youth-team player continued his recovery during a month-long loan stint at Met Police before being recalled by Richie Barker, the former Crawley manager, who was sacked last November. Yet, despite featuring regularly on the substitutes’ bench, Smith did not get on the pitch for John Gregory, who succeeded Barker as manager shortly after Smith’s return to the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Smith underlined his potential during a loan stint with Met Police, the Ryman League side, during the 2012-13 season, scoring 24 goals in 19 appearances that included two hat-tricks. That impressive return earned him promotion to Crawley’s first-team squad, for whom he made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth in December 2012. It was one of four appearances that Smith made coming off the bench during the season before being loaned to Eastbourne Borough, another non-League side.
