Smith strikes double salvo for leaders Kings
Jonté Smith, the Bermuda striker, continued his impressive start to the season for Kemi Kings, scoring a brace in his side’s 3-0 win at Oulun Luistinesura on Saturday.
Smith has scored three goals in two matches for the Kings who play in the Kakkonen North league, the third tier of Finnish football.
The 19-year-old has helped the Kings to a perfect start to the season after scoring on his league debut in a 2-0 home win over PK-37 last weekend.
“Everyone in the team is thrilled with our start,” Smith said. “To have scored five goals and not conceded in two games is a very good start, but we need to keep it up and go on a good run of games.
“I feel that keeping clean sheets are vital because we are a very good attacking team with the Finnish players as well as players like Jon Dollery and Billy Ions, who have played at clubs like Crawley Town, Newcastle United and been involved in the Nike Academy.
“The defence has been fantastic so far, and I am sure they will keep it up.”
Ions, a former Newcastle academy striker, gave the Kings the lead in the 26th minute when he rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into the net after being played through by a pass from Dollery, the Canadian defender.
Smith, who joined the Kings on loan from Crawley Town, the Sky Bet League One side, in March until the end of the English season, then killed the game off after hitting the target in the 43rd and 89th minutes with a pair of headers.
He doubled the Kings’ lead just before half-time after applying the finishing touch to a sweeping attack by nodding in a cross from David Bitsinou at the back post. Smith then put the result further beyond doubt after losing his marker and heading home a corner from Finnish midfielder Tuomas Tyystala.
