Gibbons ban too harsh, say Western Stars
Western Stars Sports Club are considering appealing against a lengthy Bermuda Football Association ban on the club’s footballer Treadwell Gibbons.
The BFA banned Gibbons for five years for his violent conduct in the FA Cup Final against North Village at the National Sports Centre last month.
Dandy Town, the Premier Division, Dudley Eve and FA Cup champions, fall under the auspices of Western Stars.
Gershon Gibbons, the club’s treasurer, said that their executive intend to meet to discuss what action to take in response to the BFA’s ruling which he feels is over the top.
“We are going to meet to discus it because it is a bit harsh,” he said.
“For spitting somebody got five years and this was not a five-year offence in my opinion.”
The executive was alluding to the five-year ban the BFA imposed on Detroy Smith, of St David’s, for spitting on referee Anthony Francis during the Friendship Trophy semi-final on Boxing Day at Wellington Oval last year.
“How can you even put them in the same boat?” he added. Western Stars have until next Tuesday to submit an appeal to the BFA against the sanction imposed on Gibbons, their goalkeeper.
“It is possible we will appeal, but it cannot be one person’s decision ... it has to be the group and the group has not met,” added Gibbons, the treasurer.
“The executive body has not met so I cannot speak on their behalf. But we are trying to meet as soon as possible before the deadline to decide how we are going to approach this.”
Gibbons, the Town goalkeeper, landed himself in hot water for leaving his goal area to get involved in an altercation between team-mate Zaire Burchall and Jason Davis, the Village defender, during the FA Cup Final which Town won 1-0. A challenge by Davis on Burchall escalated when Burchall swung an arm at Davis, who then retaliated.
All three players were sent off for violent conduct by Ronue Cann, the referee.
Burchall was served with a four-game suspension and Davis a two-match ban and a 12-month probation, but the BFA came down hardest on Gibbons for an unprovoked attack that left onlookers astounded.
Gibbons also landed himself in trouble while playing in Cup Match for St George’s last summer when he hotly disputed a dismissal to a catch at slip by Somerset’s Janeiro Tucker on the second day and had to be restrained.
St George’s subsequently imposed a suspended two-year Cup Match ban on Gibbons, who plays in the league for Cleveland.
The player immediately apologised to St George’s for his actions and ten days later made a public apology, promising to take steps to control his temper.
