Bermuda advance to finals
Bermuda finished top of group three on the Women’s Caribbean Cup after a 3-1 win over St Kitts and Nevis in their final match in Turks & Caicos yesterday.
Akelyla Furbert, Shuntae Todd and Dominique Richardson scored Bermuda’s goals to ensure that they could not be caught by Cayman Islands who beat Turks & Caicos 3-0 in the later match.
Furbert handed Bermuda the lead after 14 minutes before Todd doubled their advantage from the penalty spot three minutes later.
St Kitts pulled a goal back on 28 minutes, but Bermuda restored their two-goal cushion on 71 minutes when Richardson tapped home after Todd’s free kick had been parried by the goalkeeper.
Bermuda finished group three with two wins and a draw and will advance to the final stage of the inaugural competition, which also acts as a World Cup qualifier, in Trinidad & Tobago in August.
Coach Naquita Robinson’s side, who won the NatWest Island Games last summer, will be placed with the winners of group four, the winners of group fiver, which takes place next month, and the second- best runners-up.
Group four includes host team Haiti, Cuba, Guadeloupe, and Suriname, while group five consists of host side Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Anguilla and St Lucia.
Bermuda’s team: J Smith — S Paul, T Thomas (W Bean, 88), M Christian, E Burgess — J Edness (K Brangman, 65min), D Richardson, C Bell, A Furbert — A Nolan, S Todd.
