Wells vows to be Powell’s top man
Nahki Wells is the first to admit that life at Huddersfield Town has not gone according to plan.
The Bermudian striker signed for the Sky Bet Championship side nearly a year ago, becoming the Island’s first million pound footballer.
A dream debut, where he scored the winner against Millwall less than 24 hours after signing for the club for a reported £1.3m, has soured in recent months with Wells spending more time on the bench than on the pitch.
Despite that, Wells is still his club’s leading scorer this season having hit the back of the net ten times, taking his tally for Huddersfield to 16 in total. Still, that’s not enough for the striker who admitted that he has fallen short of the targets he set himself at the start of the season.
“I am pleased to reach double digits at this stage of the season, but at the same time I did set a higher target than what I have now which I didn’t reach,” Wells said. “It’s nice to be in double figures now, but I could easily be sitting on fourteen or fifteen goals with a slice of luck or a bit more game time.
“But that’s football and I will deal with it. I will work as hard as I can to reach the end target by the end of the season.”
Hard work is a word that has become synonymous with the professional footballer who is always keen to push himself to the limit in pursuit of excellence on the pitch. Anything less, he stressed, is unacceptable.
“I am never happy with what I have achieved or done, I always want more and better,” he said. “I always want to achieve more and work harder.”
Even though Wells is Huddersfield’s leading scorer at present, he has yet to nail down a regular starting role under new manager Chris Powell, something he takes all in his stride.
“There have been ups and downs and I haven’t played consistently,” he said. “But I have still played a lot of football and I just think not being able to build on a run of games and stuff like that has probably hindered my tally and form.
“But others have stepped up and obviously done well, so I just have to keep competing and deal with it to try and prove that I can be his [Powell’s] main man and be the one to help fire us up the league.
“I know I am in his plans and I have a big part to play, so I just have to do what I have to and get in as many games as I can, keep scoring goals and work hard to improve and be the golden boy that I was brought in to be.”
Huddersfield are presently eighteenth in the league, a position that does not sit well with Wells.
“I don’t think our league position justifies or sums us up,” Wells said. “I think we are a bit unlucky to be in the position we are in. We know we are only three points off mid-table, so we could well easily be sitting in eleventh or twelfth very happy with what we have done for the first half of the season.
“But we are where we are because of simple mistakes and have given up late goals, which ended up costing us.
“We are not happy with our position and we do think we are a lot better than that and are confident that we will start climbing the table.
“It’s not an easy league, but I think we are totally capable of improving and putting together a run of games again.”
