Hood arrowing in on silverware

Fleeting joy: Hornets celebrate winning the Friendship Trophy before being stripped of their title

Robin Hood will be looking to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the second straight season when they meet Dandy Town Hornets in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

The match will be the first between the teams since their exciting Friendship Trophy final which Dandy Town won 4-3 only to be stripped of the title because Kevin Hurdle, a late substitute, was not listed on the teamsheet.

Hood are still waiting to receive the trophy from the Bermuda Football Association, preferring something low-key out of respect for their opponents, their president Derek Stapley said.

“It was a good match, we were outplayed in the first half but we scored just before half-time to make it 3-1 and made a good game of it in the second half,” Kyle Lightbourne, the Hood coach, said.

No doubt Town, as the defending champions, will be extra determined as they put their title on the line at Goose Gosling Field.

The two teams met in the semi-final of the competition last season when Town won 1-0 thanks to a penalty by goalkeeper Treadwell Gibbons.

Hood have a few injury concerns with striker Antwan Russell doubtful with a knee injury while goalkeeper Jason Simons missed last weekend’s defeat to PHC Zebras. Midfielder Shaun Brown, a former Hornets player, has missed the team’s last three games.

Lightbourne’s team have dropped into the bottom two in the table. They still have a game in hand, though, which they will play on Tuesday night against Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Recreation Club.

“We’ve had two defeats and one draw in the second half of the season and we need to start picking up points,” Lightbourne said.

“We came up against PHC who had lost their last couple of games and if we win our game in hand we’ll go two points behind them again.”

Lightbourne does not view the FA Cup as a distraction to the club’s main goal of Premier Division survival.

“The boys enjoyed being up at the stadium and all that went on and will be looking to get through to the next round, first and foremost,” he said.

“Dandy Town are a good team, have some quick players and have the depth in their squad to cope.” Southampton Rangers, on the back of two straight wins, travel to Bernard Park to face North Village, last year’s beaten finalists, in one of three matches on Sunday.

The visiting side will be upbeat as Bernard Park was where they picked up their first win of the season in October.

“We’ll go there and try to work hard and have some high quality in the attacking third,” Maurice Lowe, the Rangers coach, said.

In the other matches, 2009 winners Boulevard, the only First Division team remaining in the competition, take on Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club.

Flanagan’s Onions will meet PHC at Goose Gosling Field.
