Parish look to regain top spot

Pushing for the top: Parish's Shayne Hollis, left, in action at Police Field

Hamilton Parish can return to the top of the Premier Division tomorrow after first and third-placed teams Somerset Trojans and PHC Zebras dropped points on Thursday night.

The 0-0 draw at Somerset Cricket Club hurt both team’s title aspirations, but it puts Parish back in the driver’s seat provided they can take advantage against their landlords, St George’s at Wellington Oval.

They shared the points in their first meeting in October, but things could be different this time as Parish know that maximum points this weekend and then next Sunday against Trojans, also at home, could put them well on their way to a first league title.

However, as they experienced against bottom team Southampton Rangers in their last outing, complacency can be costly as St George’s, too, are in need of points to stay clear of relegation.

Only three points separate the bottom five teams, with Robin Hood moving out of the relegation zone and up to sixth after their victory over Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Recreation Club on Thursday.

Cougars have slumped lately and could drop into the relegation zone depending on the results.

They meet defending champions Dandy Town tomorrow at St John’s Field, with only a point separating the sides in mid-table and Hornets needing to win to keep alive their hopes of retaining their title. They remain seven points behind the leaders Somerset.

Rangers take on North Village for the second straight weekend, having lost at Bernard Park in the FA Cup last Sunday. Rangers have been a tough team to beat at Southampton Oval where a win tomorrow could lift them a couple of places in the table.

Flanagan’s Onions will play Robin Hood on Monday night at Goose Gosling Field where a win for last-placed Onions would move them level on 17 points with Hood.

Boulevard and Devonshire Colts set the pace in the First Division, but fourth-placed BAA Wanderers can make that race tighter when they travel to Police Field to meet leaders Boulevard.

Somerset Eagles meet Colts at White Hill Field in another crucial encounter tomorrow.

Wolves won their match in hand on Thursday against Young Men’s Social Club and with the top four teams meeting each other, they can close the gap against Paget Lions at Southampton Oval.

Ireland Island Rangers meet Social Club at Malabar Field while X-Roads take on St David’s at Garrison Field.
