Wells disappointed at Powell sacking
Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, has expressed his disappointment at the sacking of Chris Powell as the club’s manager after a poor run of form.
Powell, whose side have won just three games this season, was fired yesterday by the Sky Bet Championship side after Huddersfield’s 2-2 draw away to Reading on Tuesday.
The result left Huddersfield languishing in eighteenth position in the table, just five points above the relegation zone.
Alex Dyer, Powell’s assistant, has also left the club, with Mark Lillis, the academy manager, in temporary charge for Saturday’s Yorkshire derby with Leeds United at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Wells, who scored his fourth goal of the season against Reading on Tuesday, often found himself out of favour under Powell but said he always felt part of the manager’s plans.
“I woke up in the morning and saw it on the news that he has been sacked and I’m a bit disappointed,” Wells said. “It hasn’t been smooth sailing under him. But I have never once felt at any time he didn’t see me in his plans.
“I’m going to miss him and the coaching staff because [Powell] is what you would call a good guy in the management game. He is someone that you liked so much and you never had a bad word to say about.
“But football is a results business and the reality is we haven’t been getting the best of results. It’s a bit of a dog-eat-dog world.”
Powell’s sacking arrives just days before Huddersfield’s derby clash against Leeds.
“It come at a rough time because we have a big game at the weekend,” Wells said. “It’s probably the biggest game of our season against our rivals Leeds live on telly.
“It’s going to be a big one but everyone is experienced enough to know that these things happen in football and you can’t dwell on it too much. Sometimes people depart and you just have to get on with your job and hopefully we can get that win at home and try and restart our season.”
Wells returned to the starting line-up in Tuesday’s draw with Reading after having a heart-to-heart conversation with Powell.
“It’s nice to always get a goal after having had a one-on-one chat with the manager in terms of how we felt things needed to change,” Wells said. “It was a step in the right direction and we actually saw eye-to-eye on what needed to happen to help me get back doing what I do best and that’s scoring goals.
“I’m delighted to be back on the scoresheet and delighted to get the start after not starting away to Burnley.”
Huddersfield led twice but were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after conceding late on from a set piece.
“It was a tough match, probably one of our toughest games this season,” Wells said. “We started like a house on fire. We scored after two minutes and then conceded a fluke free kick which was a tough one to accept. But then I finally got a chance and was able to take that opportunity to put us ahead 2-1.
“We felt comfortable and had loads of possession and dominated the game after taking the lead. But I think we sat a bit too deep and invited the pressure and in the end it was too much to deal with.
“I think a point is a fair result if you are looking at the game overall. It’s just hard to accept it when you have kept the lead for such a long period of time and then concede late.”
