Wolves ponder move for Wells
Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, has been linked with a move to Sky Bet Championship rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves are in the market for a goalscorer having sold Benik Afobe, a former Huddersfield loanee, to Barclays Premier League side Bournemouth for £10 million, with Wells believed to be near the top of their radar.
Wells, who signed for a club record fee of £1.5 million from Bradford City in 2014, has been in fine form of late, scoring his fourth goal in as many games in Huddersfield’s 2-2 draw at home to Reading in the FA Cup third round at the weekend.
It was the Bermuda striker’s ninth goal of the season and 83rd in 200 appearances in English football.
Wells was previously a target for Wolves during Dean Saunders’s ill-fated stint as manager in 2013, which culminated in relegation to League One.
Saunders later said he would have attempted to lure Wells to Molineux had he not been sacked as soon as Wolves were relegated.
David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said he was not concerned about the transfer talk surrounding the 25-year-old, who is believed to have also attracted the interests of Championship sides Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.
“This is something we have spoken about,” Wagner told the Huddersfield Examiner.
“No players will leave us in this window if I am not happy with the situation, so we feel protected.
“To be honest, if my players are targets of other clubs, I am happy, because it means they doing a good job and developing.
“Hopefully they will feel more confident if they are admired by others. For me, I am not worried or afraid.”
Should Wagner’s side defeat Reading in their third-round replay next Tuesday, they will meet League One side Walsall in the fourth round, which takes place from January 29 to February 1.
Huddersfield, who are eighteenth in the table, are in league action at home to struggling Charlton Athletic today.
