Huddersfield crumble after Hogg red card

Matej Vydra bagged a hat-trick as Reading came from two goals down to hammer Huddersfield Town 5-2 in last night’s FA Cup third-round replay.

Huddersfield scored twice in the first 15 minutes, through Jamie Paterson and Tommy Smith, and were in complete control until Jon Hogg was sent off for a professional foul in the 26th minute.

Hogg felled Vydra on the edge of the area, and Lucas Piazon, the Reading midfielder, then exacted a full measure of revenge by scoring from the resulting free kick.

Vydra, scored twice inside four minutes in the second half to put his side 3-2 ahead, and then added a third at the death, before Alex Fernandez’s long-range strike rounded out a fine win for Reading, who now face Walsall in the fourth round.

Nahki Wells had another quiet night upfront, with the Bermuda striker failing to score for the second successive game, although he did strike the crossbar with a left-footed shot in the 64th minute, three minutes after Reading went ahead 3-2.

In last night’s other replays Aston Villa forgot their Barclays Premier League woes and moved into the next round with an unconvincing 2-0 win over Sky Bet League Two side Wycombe Wanderers at Villa Park.

A 75th-minute header from Ciaran Clark and a last-minute strike from Idrissa Gueye settled the tie as Villa, beaten finalists last season but presently bottom of the Premier League, won for only the fourth time this season to set up a home meeting with Manchester City.

West Bromwich Albion, the only other Premier League team in action, were also made to battle for victory over lower league opposition, seeing off Sky Bet Championship strugglers Bristol City 1-0 at Ashton Gate.

The home side, who sacked manager Steve Cotterill last week, kept Albion out until the 52nd minute when Salomon Rondon, Albion’s record $17-million signing, trapped the ball on his chest before sweeping it home.

Albion will face Peterborough United at home in the next round. Like Villa, debt-ridden Bolton Wanderers are another club whose glory days seem long gone but they also enjoyed a much needed win.

Bolton, who have won the competition four times but are struggling at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship and facing a fight for survival with debts of £172.9 million, won their replay against Eastleigh 3-2 at the Macron Stadium.

Eastleigh, who play in the National League, gave Bolton an early scare when they took the lead after 11 minutes through Joe Partington, their full back.

Bolton, who face a winding-up order from the tax authorities at the High Court next month, came back by scoring twice in four minutes through Gary Madine and Dean Moxey just before half-time.

The visiting side equalised through Kaid Mohamed before the break, before Darren Pratley, who scored the late equaliser in the original tie, scored what proved to be the winner after 52 minutes. Bolton now face fellow Championship side Leeds United at home.

There was also joy for Portsmouth, now playing in League Two, but FA Cup winners as recently as 2008, who saw off Ipswich Town 2-1 at Fratton Park. They now face South Coast rivals Bournemouth.

Milton Keynes Dons, meanwhile, earned themselves a trip to Stamford Bridge and a tie against Chelsea with a 3-0 win over Northampton Town.
