Goal celebration goes viral
Markez and Martel Laws hit the high note with their pitch-perfect goal celebration in West End United’s 4-1 victory over Lock & Key in the Corona League last week.
The identical twin brothers, who played in the Premier Division last season with Flanagan’s Onions, have gained a reputation for premeditated celebrations over the years.
Against Lock & Key, they managed to out-do themselves with their colourful antics after Martel found the net in his side’s comfortable win at Goose Gosling Field.
Immediately after scoring, Martel ran towards the corner flag and waited for Markez to join him and perform a back handstand, resting his legs on his brother’s shoulder.
Martel then proceeded to “play” his brother like a cello using the corner flag as a bowed string, much the enjoyment of the crowd with the imaginative celebration being captured on a spectator’s cell phone.
The video was sent to popular social media site, the Sports Bible, who posted it on its Facebook page. As of yesterday, the Laws’s “cello” celebration had received more than 600,000 hits.
“When we played in the Corona League a few years ago we used to do quite a few celebrations,” said Markez, who credited his brother for the idea.
“We’d stopped doing them but we were asked by a few people to bring them back so we had to come up with something original.
“It was Martel’s idea, our team-mates didn’t know about it. I saw him score and I was like ‘I need to get up there and become part of the celebration. We’ve been really surprised by the number of hits it’s got.”
