Cougars on the rise as Colts collapse

Leading the way: Kwame Steede, the Cougars player-coach, scored twice

Devonshire Colts 0

Devonshire Cougars 5

Two goals from Kwame Steede, the Devonshire Cougars player-coach, paved the way for his side to run rampant over Devonshire Colts at Police Field yesterday.

The hefty scoreline was indicative of the dominance that Cougars enjoyed over Colts all afternoon.

Cougars and Colts seem to be heading in opposite directions in the Premier Division table, with Steede’s side beginning the climb for mid-table respectability, while Colts appear to be in freefall.

The wind was taken out of Colts’ sails early on as Cougars scored their first goal 45 seconds into the match.

Steede sent Chamari Burns through on goal, with the midfielder’s low-searching cross from just inside the box bobbling off a defender’s foot and flying over the head of Gregory Rose, the Colts goalkeeper.

Cougars constant forays would again be rewarded when they notched their second in the 32nd minute when Machi Battersbee delivered a pinpoint pass to Steede who, after a log run, placed a beautiful header beyond Rose.

Cougars pounced again in the 38th minute when Steede again got in behind the defence, eluding Rose who had advanced from his goal to slot home from close range.

Cougars’ Zeko White nearly added a fourth before half-time, rattling the bar with a powerful header.

Lozendro Symonds had an opportunity for Colts, racing behind the Cougars defence, before being denied by Kioshi Trott, the Cougars goalkeeper, as he attempted to take the ball past him.

Cougars were back at it again in the 60th minute when Burns tracked down a long pass along the right flank.

Burns sidestepped two Colts defenders and got off a blistering shot that found its way inside the right upright. Cougars, for good measure, added a fifth when Moses Steede scored in the 70th minute.

Colts’ superb start to the season, where they were undefeated in their first six league, seems a distant memory after losing five and drawing one in their last six games.
