I knew they could do it without me - Wells
Nahki Wells, the Huddersfield Town striker, could be available for Bermuda’s Caribbean Cup second-round matches.
The second round of the competition will be played from May 15 to 21 after Huddersfield’s Sky Bet Championship season finishes.
“I haven’t ruled myself out of the next set of games, but we will see what happens,” Wells said.
“If I’m fit and healthy and I can make it then I don’t see why I wouldn’t put myself forward to represent my country.
“There’s a lot of football left for me to play and the most important thing is staying fit and preparing well and doing well for Huddersfield.
“If I can finish the season strong and healthy, we will see what happens then.”
Bermuda advanced to the second round of the Caribbean Cup after French Guiana’s 3-0 victory at home to Cuba in Cayenne on Tuesday night.
Bermuda lost 2-1 away to Cuba in their opening first round fixture before coming from behind to beat French Guiana by the same scoreline four days later at the National Stadium to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
French Guiana finished top of the group thanks to their superior goal difference, with Bermuda in second place and Cuba bottom.
All three teams finished tied on three points, with the top two sides advancing to the second round.
Wells, Huddersfield’s leading goal scorer with 16 goals, opted not to play for Bermuda because of fatigue and niggling injuries.
“I just wanted to try to focus on my club career and try to finish the season as strong as I can,” Wells said.
“It hasn’t been easy because I have had niggles and travelling across the world for two fixtures would not have done myself any good, so that’s the reason I chose to pull out.”
Wells, who captained Bermuda in the Fifa World Cup qualifiers last year, said he never doubted that Bermuda could clear the first hurdle in his absence.
“I always had belief that the squad could get through without me, which they proved,” the former Dandy Town man said.
“It was good to see Bermuda beat French Guiana and good to see a few new faces out there doing well.
“I didn’t get a chance to watch the game. I did catch some live streaming off somebody’s periscope, which was difficult to watch. But I stayed up until the final whistle, and it was good to see us win.
“I knew the win would likely see us through because of the first result, so to see them go through was good.
“We have another double set of fixtures come May, and so the players and the country have a lot more to focus on and look forward to.
“It’s always an exciting time in Bermuda when it is international fixtures.”
Wells also praised his former Dandy Town team-mates, who clinched a fourth Premier Division title in seven seasons and eighth overall.
“It’s always good to hear Dandy Town winning the league,” he said. “This year they absolutely breezed through the league winning in March with games to spare and it’s good to see that.
“It’s good to see that domestically they are still a dominant team since I left in 2010.”
Wells and his Huddersfield team-mates are bracing themselves for a second Yorkshire derby in as many outings when they host Sheffield Wednesday at John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.
“We have another big one on Saturday and in my eyes probably an even bigger derby than the Leeds one because Wednesday are coming in with great form and we are off the back of a big Yorkshire derby win as well,” Wells said.
“It should be a good atmosphere and a great game and hopefully we can come out victorious.”
The other teams to advance to the second of the Caribbean Cup are Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, United States Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Curaçao, Guyana, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Dominica.
Jamaica, Haiti, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago received a bye in the preliminary round because of their involvement in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers
