Wells told to keep taking penalties

On the spot: Wells

Nahki Wells will take Huddersfield Town’s next penalty — despite his miss at Leeds United two weeks ago.

David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, gave the Bermudian striker a vote of confidence ahead of their derby match with Sheffield Wednesday today.

Huddersfield have scored just once from the spot in their last three attempts, with Wells missing a penalty against Leeds and Emyr Huws doing likewise in the defeat to Bristol City.

Wells made amends somewhat by later netting his sixteenth goal of the season in the 4-1 win against Leeds. Wagner has given his top scorer permission ton continue taking the team’s spot-kicks.

“If we get a penalty and Nahki is on the pitch, he will take for sure,” said the manager who is targeting the tenth win of his tenure.

“I was very happy with his reaction to what happened at Leeds. A few weeks earlier we spoke about body language after missing some chances.

“We said the very best of players miss chances and that you must deal with it, stay mentally strong and keep going.

“Nahki did exactly this at Leeds, and went on to provide an assist and a goal.

“It was a great story for him and a telling sign for me as a coach.”

Wednesday have sold out their near 4,000 tickets for the match at John Smith’s Stadium.
