Wagner left frustrated by poor finishing

Off target: Wells has not scored at home since March 8

Nahki Wells’s two-game scoring streak came to a halt as Huddersfield Town were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.

The Huddersfield striker entered the game John Smith’s Stadium in fine form having scored in his team’s previous two outings against Blackburn Rovers and Rotherham United to take his season tally to 18.

However, Wells was unable to make further inroads towards his 20-goal target against Birmingham who squandered a late lead.

“We had problems with our finishing and we need to do better,” David Wagner, the Huddersfield head coach, said. “Our shots were not good enough and a lot were blocked or went wide. We did not make their goalkeeper work hard enough.

“I am disappointed with the result, but when you come back with ten or 15 minutes left you can be satisfied.”

Wells missed with a right-footed effort from outside the box in the 28th minute and also blasted a shot wide two minutes before half-time.

The former Dandy Town striker had another effort go wide early in the second half.

Birmingham took the lead in the 73rd minute through David Cotterill who scored from a free kick.

However, Joel Lynch rescued a point for the home side in the 82nd minute when he fired the ball in from a Sean Scannell corner.

Wells, who is a firm favourite to be crowned the club’s player of the year next weekend, has not scored at John Smith’s Stadium since Huddersfield’s 3-1 triumph over Reading on March 8.

Elsewhere, Wells’s compatriot Reggie Lambe came on as a 69th minute substitute in Mansfield Town’s 1-1 League Two home draw with Barnet.

The Bermuda international had just one attempt on goal, a right-footed effort from outside the box that was saved.

Mansfield were forced to chase the game after John Akinde headed the visitors into the lead in the sixth minute.

However, the home side hit back in the 30th minute when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe fired the teams level.

Rai Simons, the Chesterfield striker, was not included in his team’s squad that lost 1-0 away to Swindon Town in League One.

The visitors took the lead for good in the 77th minute through Yaser Kasim.

Chesterfield, who remain in danger of relegation, were reduced to ten men two minutes from time when Charlie Raglan received a second booking for a bad foul.
